Hi,
I'm looking for any detail on where a Fitzgerald family lived near Killarney, Kerry around 1830.
The detail I have from New South Wales records is:
Father Garrett FITZGERALD (birth & death unknown)
Mother Honora FLAHIVE (birth & death unknown)
Child Ellen born Kerry IRE 1828-29
Child Garrett born Killarney IRE 1830-31
Child John born Kerry IRE 1830-31
Son Garrett migrated to AUS in the 1850's at his own expense.
In 1861, Garrett sponsored John & Ellen to migrate as government "Assisted Immigrants".
John migrated in 1862 and Ellen (with her husband John NAUGHNANE) in 1863.
While their recorded address was just "Ireland", their "referee of character" was:
The Rev'd. John Fitzgerald DAY
Beaufort, near Killarney
In 1861, Garrett had also sponsored Honora Connor (aged 13, address "Ireland") but she did not migrate.
In 1864, his brother John re-sponsored Honora (aged 17, address "Firies, Killarney, Co. Kerry") with
character referee being "Parish Priest, Firies, Co. Kerry". Honora migrated in 1865.
I hope this information will helpt to locate the Fitzgerald family but understand that the required historical records may not be available.
Regards,
AUS-Mike

Well they go across to the Bandon lot.... and Garrett Fitzgerald, Prime Minister, was part of that lot and he wasn't RC.
he was on "Who Do you think you are" program talking about his family history....

Ballyfinnane and Firies townlands were owned by the Browne family, later Earls of Kenmare.
They leased Ballyfinnane to James Mahony of The Point in 1758, he had taken a lot of leases from the Brownes around then. He died in 1794, but I presume his descendants still held on to the land.
Firies townland was leased by the Brownes to the O'Connor Kerry family after the siege of Tralee back in 1652. They were still there until the 1860's when Barry O'Connor was going around brandishing guns at people. I suspect Barry was the son of Jeremiah who is shown in the 1836 Electoral Roll as being a freeholder in Firies, though most of the land he held there was still leasehold as per Griffiths.
There is also a John O'Connor in Firies in Griffiths. His wife and daughter moved to Australia in 1857 and left him behind, see https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/O'Connor-301.

More on Connors though I wouldn't swear to the accuracy of this snippet from 1840:

In the National Library of Ireland
"Copy of royal licence to the Rev. John Robert Fitzgerald and Edward Fitzgerald, both of Spring Hill in Co. Kerry, to take the name of Day in addition and after that of Fitzgerald and to quarter the arms of Day, July 26, 1841."

Garret appears in three separate Valuation Office Books in 1849, 1850, and 1852: http://census.nationalarchives.ie/search/vob/results.jsp?surname=fitzgerald&firstname=&year_from=&year_to=&dd_dd=&dd_mm=&dd_yyyy=&book=&county=&barony=&parish=&townland=ballyfinnane&last_name_other_or_lessor=&first_name_other_or_lessor=&search=Search

Oxford Dictionary of National Biography entry for Mr. Justice Robert Day of Kerry (Born Dublin)
:-
"Day's second wife, whom he married on 21 June 1824, was Mary, daughter of Bartholomew Fitzgerald MD of Brandon, co. Cork, and a Roman Catholic. This lady, ostensibly a companion to his first wife, was the mother of two sons fathered by Day during the currency of his first marriage. These boys, both of whom took Anglican orders, assumed the surname Day in accordance with the terms of their father's will."

Hello All,
First, thank you all for your prompt and helpful responses. I'm new to researching within Ireland and the many links you've provided will be very useful now and in the future.
Also, my apologies for not responding sooner to your questions - some family matters arose requiring my attention. I will answer some questions now and provide further clarification as I absorb your posts.
To Hallmark
Religion - All those who came to NSW are Roman Catholic. I expect Garrett senior and Honora would also be RC. Thanks for your landed estates link.
To Sinann
Thank you for the link to Parish Registers. I see that Killarney records go back much earlier and will check out these in case the family moved around.
To Dathai
Re your comment: "Hmm quite a few around" ...
Yes, my earlier searches of more common websites revealed many Garrett Fitzgeralds and Honora Flahives but without information useful in filtering out the unrelated ones. Thanks for the many links.
However, I think you may have found something by using the alternate "Gerard" spelling of "Garrett" to find the mother "Honora Flahive" & the location GURRANE which I see is just north of TRALEE. Garrett junior's 1902 NSW Catholic Journal obituary stated that he was a "native of Tralee" but his 1859 Berrima NSW parish marriage certificate states his birthplace as Killarney. All "unknown" on his NSW civil marriage certificates. I will check it through.
To you all
I believe the connection to the Rev'd Fitzgerald-Day and his high standing is significant. Garrett junior was supposed to have arrived here in 1858 (44 "years in colony" on his 1902 death cert) and, within months, been appointed to the NSW Police in Berrima ahead of a serving Constable with good record from the nearby larger town of Goulburn. I had concluded that Garrett must have had a pretty good reference to achieve this. The news report of his appointment stated that as Garrett was "so worthy", other applicants "could not be considered".
I have to do some digging and calculate the years but it's possible that the mother of the Rev'd Fitzgerald-Day is related in some way to Garrett senior.
Once again, many thanks,
AUS_Mike

Hello again,
Sorry, I forgot to mention ...
In another NSW Archives collection (ship's muster), John Fitzgerald's 1861 address is "Lahy Co. Kerry".
I've checked Google Maps & the Irish Historical Names Database & Wikipedia's Townlands of Co Kerry but can't find a match.
Do you have suggestions? John was listed as being able to read & write when this was recorded.
I have attached a screen snap of this with surrounding addresses for comparison. (My PC just shows "(http://)" when I try to insert an image directly in the post. Must be my setup.)
Regards,
AUS_Mike

I wonder if it could be a misheard Faha.
There is more than one but the townlands of Faha East and Faha West are not too far from Killarney and Beauford.

Day applied to combine the 2 family crests so the mother of the Rev'd Fitzgerald-Day was entitled to use her family crest.... in order to use a family crest one has to record and prove lineage so the Fitzgerald lineage is most probably registered in Genealogical Office.

The official spelling of Gurrane is Garraun and it is next to Ballyfinnane as per https://www.townlands.ie/kerry/magunihy/molahiffe/kilnanare/garraun/ that's why Garrett and Honora married in Castlemaine.

Hello Again,
To John Falvey ...
My apologies for not acknowledging your assistance in my earlier replies. Thank you for your articles & links.
Regardsing your comment ...
"that is why Garrett and Honora married in Castlemaine."
I'm sorry, I cannot see this in the posts.
Have you located the actual marriage record? Or is this inferred from John's baptism?

AUS_Mike

The baptism record dathai posted of John to Gerald Fitzgerald and Honora Flahive was in Castlemaine.

Sinann is right, I should have been referring to that baptism.

Hello Again,
This is just a note to say thanks again for all your assistance and the information & links provided.
It was much more than I had expected would be available.
I used the Griffith maps to locate Garrett's property in Ballyfinnane also constructed a map of the townlands of family members. I've incorporated your info and the map into a document I prepared for a friend and believe she will be very pleased.
I will close the post in a few days to get it off the active board.
Thanks again,
