My ancestor was Henry COLLINS (b. 1792 in Alverstoke, Hampshire), son of George COLLINS (b. 1768 at Alverstoke, Hampshire) & Margaret nee FORBES. Henry was the brother to my direct ancestor, my ggg-grandmother Susanna Fanny Collins born at Portsea in 1811. Henry, a Royal Navy Commander was according to the Maritime Biographical Index a descendant of Greenvile COLLINS, a prominent hydrographer & Commander of the Royal Yacht during Charles II's reign. I know George's parents were William COLLINS & Hannah nee Ayling. Greenvile married an Eleanor nee HOCKER at St Lukes, Chelsea, London in 1679. Seeking any information showing exactly how my COLLINS line descends from Greenvile COLLINS? Any help much appreciated. Thanks, Rob

Have you found out the names of all the children of Greenville and Eleanor?
-
According to familysearch.org they had the following children:
Isabella (1680), Barbara (1681), Greenvile junior (1683), Elizabeth (1684), James (1686), America (1687) & John (1688). The children were christened at St. Margaret, Westminster in London.
I have no idea which son produced my line of the family so am flying blind with this research!
Cheers

Have you found out anything about William Collins/Hannah Ayling - place and year of marriage?
-
Thanks chempat for your interest. Yes I know that William Collins married Hannah Ayling on 26th December, 1758. I could not determine however from where William originated.Hopefully a distant Collins cousin can fill in the gaps! Chrs Rob
-
Just to add that William and Hannah's marriage was in Alverstoke,Hampshire in 1758.
-
Thanks chempat forgot to add that!! Marriage entry does not show other details..at least none showing on familysearch..witnesses etc Can you suggest ideas on how to pursue this Collins line? Chrs Rob
-
Various trees on Ancestry have William born 1730, Alverstoke, with parents William and Ann. They suggest - presumably just a guess - that William senior was born in 1700, place unknown.
Presumably William, about 1730, Alverstoke, was the grandson of one of these : Greenvile junior (1683), James (1686)or John (1688), so William senior would have to be born slightly after 1700.
Have you looked at other online trees, just to see what is suggested?
-
Thanks for your thoughts chempat. I have had a brief look at other trees but will certainly need to review these & try to follow up Greenvile's sons descendants. The difficulty of course are the common names & finding the London-Hampshire linkage too. Rob

William Collins & Hannah Ayling married by licence in 1758. William made his mark, Hannah signed. One witness was Mary Ayling, the other Anthony Woodson (I think).
I have not found an entry in the Hampshire Marriage Allegations for the couple, so the licence was possibly issued in a higher court.

Thanks for the information Nell..what are the usual reasons for licence marriages by comparison with banns being read? I cannot seem to locate witness details in familysearch.org. Perhaps I am looking in the wrong place? Thanks chrs Rob

There are all sorts of reasons for marriage by licence - speed, perhaps because the groom might be going abroad or posted overseas. Others reasons include not wanting everyone else to know too far in advance which is what would happen with posting banns.

Hi, Susanna Fanny Collins was my gg grandmother

Hi Bexlin55 how wonderful!! We are clearly cousins since Susannah is my ggg grandmother through Margaret Henrietta Welsmore Hartley. What was the family talk about these ancestors in your own immediate family? Do any photos of Susannah or her sons/daughters still survive? Thanks for your post.. cheers Rob - Australia

Sorry no pictures, I would love some too. I'm the first in family to research the family tree, so no info there. Just looked on FindMyPast and Margaret Henrietta Welsmore Hartley is my great grand aunt !! I am a Hartley too...
-
No problem I guess its very lucky if people have photos from so long ago. As you can see I have placed other entries regarding the Hartleys too. They too are interesting family. Margaret's father was Edward who in turn was a chemist in both Portsea & London. Feel free to have a look at my ads. Margaret's daughter Fanny Esther LEE was my great grandmother. Her daughter was a Fanny Esther PATTERSON who was my grandmother. I also descend from Fanny's daughter Edith May COWAN. How do you descend from Margaret? Cheers Rob

Hi Rob, Hope this makes sense....Margaret Henrietta Welsmore Hartley's youngest brother Harry Hartley is my great grandfather. His son George Ernest is my grandfather and his son is my father. Do you have any old family pictures at all? I'm always searching for them on the internet..

Sorry I have no photos of this era however I have some photos of my grandmother Fanny Esther Cowan (1879-1958). She would have been Margaret Henrietta Welsmore Lee (nee Hartley). She grew up in Vauxhall London until marriage when she lived at Eastwood/Southend in Essex. Fanny came to Australia with my mother Edith & her brother Albert in 1938. Cheers Rob
