On Proni, there is a will for Henry Lennox who died in 1881. In the will, he mentioned his late brother Joseph who had died in Grace Hill, and had a son John over Lennox. What does that mean- John over Lennox?

Do you have a copy of the will?
It would be a good idea to post that section you are interested in on the Handwriting Deciphering board here on Rootschat.
It's always better to see the original. :)

The Will of Henry Lennox late of Aughrim County Londonderry Farmer deceased who died 28 April 1881 at same place was proved at Londonderry by William George Lennox of Aughrim aforesaid Farmer one of the Executors.
Reading the Will Book it looks like the word 'over' might have been an instruction in the original Will and nothing to do with nephew John's name (remember that what survives is a copy of the original Will).

Perhaps the details of this John Lennox are referred to over the page!
Skoosh.

I don't think so Skoosh.
The will is just one page. That's all you get on the Proni site.
No facility to look at the next page - I think if there had been some continuation of it on another page, they would have let you see the image.

I agree.... perhaps the original Will had John written in it and his surname was written under the word John!

The original probably was one page written on both sides, with over in the bottom right of the first side, today we would write p.t.o

The image on the Proni site is not the original, it's a transcribed copy.

This has been very interesting . I did not realize that what we are seeing is a transcribed copy . So my thought is that a person had to either turn over the page or go to another page . At any rate the word over is not part of his name. Thanks everyone .

No...often a Solicitor would narrate a Will to someone in office and they would record it in Ledger.

There seems to be some confusion here over exactly what the Will Books are. They are not the original Will or papers from a solicitor's office. The original Wills were copied by clerks by each District Registry and the originals deposited in Dublin. Luckily, when the Wills in Dublin were destroyed, those from the Armagh Belfast and Londonderry Registries survived. These Will Books are what PRONI have copied and indexed so that we can see them online.
In this particular case when the word 'over' was written on the page the clerk transcribed the same thing and carried on with the transcription.

If the will is not listed on Proni, might it still exist ? And where? Also when it says no image, does that mean the will has not been transcribed onto Proni but might still be available if asked?

Pre-1900 Wills don't survive which is why the Will Books are such a fantastic resource.
As to 'no image' it would depend on that particular item so without further details impossible to answer accurately.

I am looking at this will again. Henry Lennox died Apr 28, 1881 in Aughrim and his will mentions his late brother Joseph with son John. I am thinking Joseph died Feb 18, 1880 in Ballykennedy. That death is not on irishgenealogy. Also thinking Henry and Joseph are sons of James Lennox and Mary Boyd.
Can anyone find an obit/writeup/death notice for Joseph or for Henry?
Thank you
Peggy
