Title: James Barrett
Post by: fb22 on Wednesday 04 July 18 14:24 BST (UK)
Hi
Trying to find out if James Barrett born in Dublin Ireland in 1864/5 died 1917 in Dublin Ireland
served in the British Army possibly in India.
I found him in the 1901 & 1911 census working as a postman in Dublin.
There's a story in my family that James Barrett and his brother were in India together.
Many thanks in advance.
.

1911 census says married 11 years-

Wife Margaret's maiden name Fitzgerald-

Marriage took place in 1899 and James listed as labourer-

Death doesn't give an occupation but he died in Asylum so perhaps wasn't able to work in later years-

If this is James Barrett's birth then looks like his father had a military connection-

Possible siblings (certificates can be checked on Irish Genealogy site)-
George Frederick (1865) https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FR3D-197
Catherine (1867) https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FRH1-37D
Patrick Jeremiah (1868) https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FPC5-TFC
William Edward (1869) https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:F52R-ZR9
Mary Ann (1872) https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:F56S-RX1

Of course there could be older children born before 1864.

Baptist of James Barrett & Margaret Fitzgerald's son (1900) list James as Sergeant _? LINK (https://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/display-pdf.jsp?pdfName=st.mary%27s-pro-cath_mf_1895-1900_ba_0580)

There's a death (1874) for an Honoria Barrett in Carlow district (age 38) which
fits with births of possible children up to 1872 and might be James' mother- in which case perhaps father Patrick Barrett married again?

Hi
Thanks for all the answers they were very helpful.
I came across a Patrick Barrett who served in the Second Boer War.
His regimental number was 5519 in the Somersetshire Light Infantry.
This may have been his brother.
The search goes on.

James Barrett is my great grandfather. He was born at home in Carlow, Ireland in May 1864. His parents were Patrick Barrett and Honoria O'Neill. They were married in Carlow on the 14th February 1860. Patrick was a staff sergeant in the Carlow Militia. Ireland was under British rule at the time and did not have it's own army. At some stage, James joined the British army and went to India, I think with his brother. India as you probably know was also under British rule then.  He came back and Married Margaret Fitzgerald in 1899 in Caragh church in County Kildare. Margaret was born in Rathangan County Kildare in 1875. They lived in Dublin city and James got a job working for the post office. At some stage James developed a psychological problem and was committed to the Richmond asylum in Grangegorman in Dublin. He died there in 1917. He is buried in an unmarked grave in Glasnevin cemetery. Margaret died at her home in 1952.
