Title: Maurice Finnegan Dublin
Post by: RayMilBax on Wednesday 04 July 18 21:36 BST (UK)
Hi
I wonder if anyone can assist please
I'm trying to trace back the family of Maurice Finnegan who was from Dublin.
I've been told that they had children of which I have found Carmel (1929), Veronica (1932), George Joseph (1935), Philomena T (1936) and Aida A (1937)
I've also been told they had others that I haven't found Maurice, Dennis and Lillian (who died young)
I've managed to find his marriage to Mary Lunney in 1922 in Dublin and fully expected to find Maurice on the 1911 census but I'm only bringing up from my searches just

A possibility?

Marriage of Martin Finegan and Maria Murphy:

Perhaps the birth of Maurice?

Maurice in 1911:

I wonder if this was Martin in 1911, despite being recorded as single?
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Dublin/Merchants_Quay__part_of_/Ardee_Row/76363/

The couple he was staying with were William Moore and Sarah Finegan who got married in 1905, note that Sarah's father was called James and the address was Upper Tyrone Street:

Great finds all of you  :) :)
I’m sure this will be the right person - the dreaded misspelling of Finnegan put down as Finegan!
Not like me that one, must be tired tonight.
Thank you all for your help I’ll have a good review tomorrow and hopefully confirmed updates from the family on the findings
Thanks
Phil

Sarah's birth? (writing is poor but can definitely make out father James, a locksmith):

Those Murphy children are proving difficult to find but there is a Maurice to Denis (plumber)and Elizabeth Cox, 1877, possible

The 'IrishGenealogy' website has the 1895 church marriage record for Martin Finegan and Maria Murphy - it identifies both parents for bride and groom:
- James Finegan & Mary Brennan;
- Denis Murphy and Elizabeth Care?

Same website has a transcript for a marriage of James Finegan and Mary Brannan of 33 South King Street in St. Andrews RC Church on 21 February 1860, fathers given as John Finegan and Pat Brannan, witnessed by Michael Gormley and Mary Byrne.  Just a maybe.

Added:
Here it is in the NLI collection, near bottom, both mothers called Mary, Finegan parents from Co. Meath, Brannan parents from Kilkenny:

Birth of Maurice Murphy (Maria's brother in the previously posted 1901 census return), the mother's name still looks something like like 'Care':

Added: Maria Murphy's brother Denis was born in 1887, mother's surname still looks something like 'Care'?

Added: Or is it 'Cave'?  Here is the 1871 marriage of Denis and Eliza:

There is a baptism in Cork of an Elizabeth Cave to George and Eliza Rahilly 1846

Speculative punt on a baptism for Elizabeth Cave, 16 December 1846, top of right page, parents George Cave and Eliza Rahilly (St. Peter and Paul's Cork):

Thanks so much Gaffy and Sinann!
I can't believe how much you've managed to find, really really pleased
I thought i was good but Irish records i do seem to struggle with
It's mainly the Finnegan's that I am interested in but those other finds with the Murphy's are great too.
Expecting some updates from the Grandson of Maurice Finnegan today hopefully and he may be able to confirm what looks like Maurice Finnegan's death I've managed to find in 1953 in Dublin which matches with a birth of around 1896 that also matches your finds  :) ;D
Thanks again
Phil

I’ve just heard from the Grandson of Maurice and yeah he remembers that his dad was about 17 when Maurice died and with George J Finnegan being born in 1934 the death of Maurice in 1953 give or take a year is right.
Thanks for all the extra info posted in the last hour also Dathai  :) :)

https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1881/02817/2033583.pdf

The address given for James Finegan and Mary Brannan on their daughter Sarah's birth registration in August 1881 (above) was 67 Upper Dominick Street.

Some months later, the Irish Times of Wenesday 12 April 1882 reported the killing of a child named Christina Finigan, hit and run over by a horse and car: 'James Finigan, of 67 Upper Dominick Street, stated that on Monday afternoon, between 3 and 4 o'clock, he was eating his dinner when he heard screams out in the street and almost immediately after a woman carried in the body of the deceased child, who was aged 3 1/2 years.  The child was alive at the time, but senseless, and died about 5 o'clock in the evening in the Mater Misericordiae Hospital... Mary Finigan, the mother of the deceased, stated that the child died in the most fearful agony. She had seven other children.'

In the death registration, Christina was described as a plumbers child:
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1882/06403/4838896.pdf

Christina Finegan was baptised in St. Michan's Dublin on 23 December 1878 (born on 19th), parents given as James Finegan and Mary Brannen of 4 Graham's Row (entry no. 1169):

The 'IrishGenealogy' Church Records section has a number of Dublin baptisms (including addresses) listed for a James Finegan and Mary Brennan, they might be Christina's siblings, eg.  Catherine bap. 1860, Maria bap. 1863, John Joseph bap. 1867, John Christopher bap. 1868, Patrick Joseph bap. 1870, and Sarah Anna bap. 1872 (maybe died early, hence Sarah Anne born in 1881 as previously posted?).

others as Keane,Caves,Caver and Carr  to George and Ellen Rahilly

Going back to the marriage of Maurice in 1922 it tells me that the marriage took place at St Kevin’s Church in what appears to state district 3 of Dublin.
I’ve since had a look on google and it’s indicating 2 St Kevin’s Churches.
Which one would it be?
The one on Bloomfield Avenue or Harrington Street?
Thanks
