Ethel Joseline E Stewart born 22.11.1892 died Q4 1976 Eastbourne Reg Dist I am seeking an Obituary or death notice. Please help me solve a riddle .
-
It’s a rather recent (death) date for most online newspaper coverage (if that is what you are hoping for).
What’s the riddle?
-
I see she was married to a Charles W A Stewart b 1879 - did he die in Leeds in 1946, aged “69”?
-
Av the riddle is we don't know who she is ???.
At some point she marries Charles we dont know where.
Charles first wife died in about 1920 in Singapore by whom he had a son who married my aunt. The son dies in WW2.
Ethel's history is the mystery. What was her maiden name ? What became of her after Charles died in 1946 ? Yes your right 1946. As for the obit I was hoping for a look up from an archive.
-
Purchase of the death certificate should give address and name of informant - possibly there cold be something in a newspaper local to where she died but if she was in some kind of care home and had no relatives maybe there would not be too much information

Thank you Suz.

If the birthdate is a year or so out I wonder whether this birth might be relevant?
Etheldreda Josceline Mitford, mmn Manners, birth reg Mar qtr 1894 Chelsea.
No, a red herring I think.
-
Likely parents if so:
Bertram Reveley Mitford
Etheldreda Mary Manners
Marr Dec qtr 1891 Chelsea.
-
Looks like Miss Mitford married Sir Offley Wakeman and died in 1996, so not the right person:

Yes thats correct. I searched .sg newspapers when I was looking for and found his first marriage and then the death of his first wife. There was also a couple of social items involving Charles and Ethel and also the award of Charles medal for war service. But I cannot find his marriage to Ethel or her maiden name.

Miss Ethel Joseline Elaine Norris, daughter of Dr and Mrs C.V. Norris of Singapore, married Captain C. Stewart of the Edendale at St Andrew’s Cathedral, Singapore on Saturday [29 July 1922].
From the Singapore Free Press, 3 August 1922 (on Cathy’s link).
-
Ethel had a sister named Hester, who was her bridesmaid. The Norris family residence was Cambo House, River Valley Road.
-
Information available on google for her parents Charles Vincent and Rosabel Katherine.
Cathy :)
-
Rosabel’s maiden name is noted as Scharenguivel in an article reporting her death.
Family tree: http://www.worldgenweb.org/lkawgw/gen1048.html
says that her husband Charles Norris died in an air raid during the Japanese occupation of Singapore.
-
Your brilliant and wonderful and if I wasn't already taken Id marry you. :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :)
-
Well to Continue;-
Thanks to you I am now accessing non British Genealogy websites and Family Trees which feature Ethel and her family on those sites and guess what ?
Most if not all trees have her listed as Ethel ROSELINE Elaine Norris and not Joseline AND have her birth as being 22.11.1887 AND baptised in 1888. So if I take this along with the dates she gave for her age from the shipping lines when she travelled to and from the U.K. ….I think it is safe to say she LIED ABOUT HER AGE by as much as 5 YEARS..
Therefore thanks to you my fellow and better than me Rootschatters I will now be searching to prove her correct christian names and her correct D.O.B.......sigh !

One more thing ….anyone know how to get Singapore Baptism records ?
