Post by: Tineke on Sunday 08 July 18 20:25 BST (UK)
Please can anyone help find my great grandfathers brother George Burke.  b 1870 Wirral,Sheffield
I have him on all census up to,1891 , then he seems to dissapear .
He was baptised 4/1/1871 at St Vincent of Paul Sheffield. Parents John Burke and Anne Burke nee Bramhall.    In the 1891 census he is at his brothers home in Shirebrook Derbyshire.   His brother William Henry Burke.  Is head of the house.   After this the trail goes cold.  Any help greatly appreciated.  Many thanks Tineke

Are his parents alive in 1911?  The census there should state how many of their children are still alive so you could at least see if he is still around or not.

I have already tried the 1911 census with no result .  His mother died in 1882.  His father who was Irish. remarried and returned to Ireland with the youngest son Hugh Burke.   Father died in Ireland in 1911.    I have the 1911 and 1901 Irish census. George is not there only Hugh with half siblings from the second marriage.   As I said after the census in Shirebrook in 1891. he seems to have dissapeared.       There are some George Burke’s around.  but nothing to say it is the one I am looking for. Thanks Tineke

Hi

Had a quick look and he was registered George Hulehan Burke 1870 at Wortley.

I cannot find him after 1881 census but a George H. Burke born 1870 appears in America but don't have access to America records

The George H Burke options in America appear to have been born there.

Thanks for your replies.  I had kept the George Hulehan Burke on file just in case  His baptism is in Latin and does not mention Hulehan.  It states. Georgius Burke.   Father  Johannis Burke. Mother Annae Bramhall.      I see that George. H Burke was born in America so that rules that out.    I can no
Longer access overseas.   I think it would be a good idea to get a birth certificate .George is the only brother I have no information on.  ,I would love to find out what happened to him.   Thanks to you all. Tineke

Hi

I saw the other GRO transcription so I looked at the page and it looks like Huleham.

The Latin baptism usually indicates they were Catholic and parents are John & Ann.

Hi

A George H. Burke is in the death registers 1934 Lambeth born 1871.

There is a George Burke in London born 1870 but it looks like he dies 1929.

Could George H. Burke have been in Army/Navy or worked in India

Hi

Had a look for the London one but nothing solid.

A George H. Burke married at Ada Maratta (Moratta) Cook1912 and the had children. Ada M. Burke is in the 1939 register and date of birth is 1889 and she dies 1977.

It might be worth you getting a copy of either the marriage or death certificate for this George H. Burke.

Derbyshire  Times and Chesterfield Herald 4th Jan 1893 has  a piece about an assault on a Policeman by three men, two Hall brothers and a George Burke all colliers from Shirebrook.
George was drunk at the time and his brother tried to stop him, he was sentenced to 2 yrs hard labour.

I think the newspaper article may be the right George.  His elder brother William Henry Burke. lived at Shirebrook. and George is at his home in the 1891 census. George must have felt a bit left out. Hie eldest brother Thomas was in Sheffield married with a family.  William Burke. (my g grandfather ). was in Shirebrook with a family. .  His mother had died. His father remarried and returned to Ireland  taking his youngest brother Hugh with him.   I must see if I can get more details about the assault and prison sentence.   Thank you all for you  greatly appreciated.   Tineke

Hi

I saw the other GRO transcription so I looked at the page and it looks like Huleham.

The entry on the GRO index available on the GRO website comes from a different source to the indexes available to view on freebmd.    I understand that Ancestry & F M P  both 'pull' this information over from freebmd so their records will be identical as Hulehan.

I have been in touch with a cousin who tells me that an elderly relative told her that George did have a criminal record .He was very close to brother William Henry as they were very young when their father left them to go back to Ireland.   George lived with William and his family for a while at Shirebrook. The last record I have of George is the 1891 census when he is at Williams house .
If George was sentenced to 2 years in prison  in 1893 he must have been released about. 1895 or 1896.  The question is now what became of him ? Where do I go from here ?
Thank you all for your help  ,much appreciated. Tineke

Ada Morratta & George Henry are on electoral rolls in Camberwell in 1934/1935/1936/1937.

Can't look but if Ada was shown as a widow in 1939 he must have died recent to that.

He's not there in 1938 and Ada is elsewhere in 1939 so the death for George Henry should give his age.

Death Dec 1937 Camberwell age 48.  Born c1889 so I think you can rule this chap out.

Thank you for your replies.    I do not think, the London George is the correct one if his second name was Henry.  My George Burke’s  Catholic baptism gives his name as Georgius Burke. no second name.  His elder brother was William Henry .   I am still not sure that the George Hulihan is him , but am keeping an open mind about it at the moment  All his brothers were baptised  at St Vincent de Paul Sheffield and had second name if any in Latin.  eg. William Henry was Guilimus Henricus Burke .
I am wondering which prison George would have been sent to ,  would it have been Derby or Nottingham or even further afield ?     Tineke
