John Thoms was born in Prestonpans in 1842 or 43 and went to Australia. He was there known as John Irwin Thoms, so maybe his mother was an Irwin. He died in 1897. I have not been able to trace his birth or his parents. Does anyone have any ideas?

Do you know when? Did he marry there or in Scotland?
What document has his birthplace as Prestonpans?

I saw mentioned there that John had 9 children. Could you name them in order. Very often Scottish naming pattern (see www.halmyre.abel.co.uk/Family/naming.htm) was used in some form and can give clues on paternal/maternal grandparents' names.

I will try to do that tomorrow. There is nothing on the Scotland's People site for John Thoms in East Lothian.

I was having a look there too. Nothing showing so far is there :-\ Tried also using '*' to pick up on possible variations such as Tom/s etc but nothing coming up.

Just a thought - could he have been born as John Irwin - mother marries Mr Thoms/Thomas and John takes on his stepfathers surname??

Why make it so hard for yourself? Purchase an image of the marriage certificate and it will give age, place of birth and parents' names.

I mentioned on the original thread that there were 9 children, however I was mistaken as different spellings in the Vic BDM index reveal 14 children (that I can find!)

We know that John Irwin THOM's wife's father's name was Walter WILSON (from their marriage notice). As Debra says, the marriage cert should reveal more info. ;)

Not that it helps with John Thoms but possible parents for Elizabeth Mary may be Walter Wilson and Elizabeth Green.

Yes. Someone told me about that! I know Walter was born in 1806, a son of John Wilson and Margaret Thomson. My own Wilsons are from Nottinghamshire, but all my mother's ancestors are from Scotland!

Hopefully if you decide to order that marriage cert, as suggested by others, it will let you follow up the elusive John Irwin Thoms!
