Title: Looking for John Ward’s parents of Coventry.c 1814
Post by: mwkelly on Tuesday 10 July 18 09:02 BST (UK)
Talk about a needle in a haystack I am trying to find my 3 X great grandfathers parents. All I have to go on is from his NZ death certificate in 1884

John Ward died in 1884 aged 64  (born c1820 Coventry). occupation Copper miner. Listed his father as John Ward snr his occupation listed as a Gamekeeper.

John Ward jnr left Coventry because he next turns up in the Parish of Stowford, Devon where he marries Mary Blithe in 1837. They then moved to Gunnislake, Cornwall occ a miner and then in 1861 went to Ontario to Bruce Mines, then onto Thames NZ. That had twelve children.

On familysearch.org there is a John Ward chc 10 Mar 1821 at Coventry son of John and Mary and a sibling Joseph ch. 4 Dec 1818. John and Mary née Blithe did have son called Joseph, So names seem to fit well.
Q. Is there info on Gamekeepers of Warwick in the 1820/30s
Q. Directory or other into which my help with The name Ward whom was a gamekeeper etc.
Q. Looking for a death of John Ward snr died possible Bef 1841 with the same or similar occupation.

There appears to be a marriage 3 Oct 1813 Nuneaton of John Ward whom married Mary Taylor but unsure if this is the right parents. Would it give Johns occupation in this marriage? Sorry I don’t have access to Ancestry.com for the moment.

Thanks for your help.
Kind regards
Murray

John's baptism is on Ancestry and Findmypast. I can't find anything regarding John senior's military history.

Another possible;

JOHN Ward christened 18 April 1823, West Orchard Independant, Coventry, Warwickshire.
Birth 26 May 1815***
Parents JOHN/RUTH

On Census John is born c 1814 and NZ Grave has c 1814 also.

Several other children to them up to 1834, some late ones as Johns.
Eg Susannah born 1821/christened 1823

But in Census John Snr is a Watchmaker. :-\

1841 Census
Coventry, Warwickshire
John Ward   50
Ruth Ward   50
Martha Ward 20
Susanna Ward 15
Eliza Ward   15
Ann Ward   13
Emma Ward 11
James Ward 9
William Ward 6
Sarah Ward 4

1851 they are under Waitt

I've looked in Devon/Warwickshire/Cornwall for any John Ward old enough to be John Jnrs Father, occp Gamekeeper, with no luck!

In the 1841 England Census John Ward is aged 25. NB: Ages rounded down to nearest whole 5 years. So could have been aged 27 at the time of the census.
In the 1851 England Census John Ward is aged 37.
In the 1861 England Census John Ward is aged 47.
Family Search has a christening record for John Ward on 8th December 1813 at St Michael, Coventry to parents John Ward and Sarah. If this John Ward was christened soon after birth, he would have been aged 37 at the time of the 1851 England Census and 47 at the time of the 1861 England Census.

A John Ward married Sarah Bright at Nuneaton on 14th March 1813. John was a bachelor of the Parish of St Michael's in the City of Coventry and Sarah was of this Parish. They were married by licence and both signed the register. Witnesses were John Astley and James Wheway (No occupations are given on the record). Source: Family Search. These may be the parents of John Ward who died in 1884. Bear in mind that the age at death given by the informant is only as good as the knowledge of the informant and it could be that he was older than 64 years.

It may be worth further investigation.

Possible death for John Ward Snr.: Burial Record at Holy Trinity, Coventry on 6th June 1824 for John Ward, Age: 40 years, Abode: Broadgate. Possible death for Sarah Bright/Ward: Burial Record at Holy Trinity, Coventry on 22th October 1840 for Sarah Ward, Age: 55 years, Abode: Broadgate.

Civil registration began in 1837, so it is possible to obtain a death certificate for Sarah Bright/Ward. Unfortunately the only record for the death of John Ward Snr. is the burial.
