Does anyone recognise this location...I can see The Bear Hotel. Maybe Bowling Street and Good Station?
Thanks for looking.

4 Bowling streets in 1939 register
The street sign on the building next to that appears to be Market Street
Sandwich, Kent
Chadderton, Lancashire
Mansfield, Nottinghamshire
Huddersfield, Yorkshire

Thanks for your input...it's a good starting point. Much appreciated.

Crickhowell.
I'll get a picture.
I can't quite line up google ... and there's a lot more street clutter, but this link might take you to google streetview looking directly at it.

Crickhowell for me also, google images crickhowell and there it is complete with monument
-
Another one for Crickhowell - it's the High Street, with Table Mountain in the background. Another old photo here:

NB - the photo has a big clue in the embossed address top left - it's a town with a fairly long name ending in -owell ;)

That's a great find Cristeen...good to know that it is still there and not another "Aldi" casualty :D

Well as a big collector, restorer and dater of old photos and postcards, I'm embarrassed to say that I presumed that was the name of the photographic studio :-\ so thanks for that confirmation. I appreciate your input.

It could well be the studio. Because of the dark background I can only make out the ends of the lines (Allen/Hall/-owell) but if you have the original you may be able to work out more.

Thanks Arthur, I do have the original but that is all I can get in Photoshop.

As for the scene. All I can see is a group of mainly younger people? Is it the damage to the building on the bottom right, possibly caused by a car or lorry that is attracting the crowd?
-
I'm disappointed to miss out on the search for this location but glad it has been found.
Fabulous clear photo Carol.

I think the children are probably looking at the photographer with all his gear set up (possibly in the middle of the road on a ladder considering his elevated view point).
I'm glad the hotel is still standing, and looking good too! :)
-
I think you are right Ruskie...sorry you missed out :-\ I might have to find another one and post it when you are awake ;D

I look forward to it Carol. ;)

I'm on it ;D

Well, well, a view I see every time I go to Abergavenny to shop, and I'm too late with my answer. Great that you have all identified it though. Crickhowell is a rather nice little town with lots of independent shops. As a matter of interest, there was an attempt by a supermarket chain to buy premises in the High Street recently, but locals opposed to this bought the premises instead, and converted them into small shops/workshops and living accommodation.
-
Incidentally, the hill in the background is called Crug Hywel (Hywel's fort), after which the town is named. It is the most spectacular hill-fort which can be seen to best effect from the air.

Hi GS....Aw sorry that you were late coming to the party but glad that you saw it. It's a lovely image and I'm pleased to see that the Hotel has survived and not been replaced by a modern abomination. As carvanners, we love to visit old towns with their farmers markets and independent shops.
You get a friendly welcome and good service where shopkeepers go the extra mile.
If you would like a copy and care to message me your email address I will happily forward you a copy if this one isn't big enough.

Thanks for the additional information GS. It's good to hear about places that have retained their small businesses, their character and their history, and resist over development. It lifts the spirits. :)
