This is my family you're referencing Sir. I am the grandson of James A Kavanagh and my father was Paul (Adrian Paul). James and my grandmother Nora are buried in Deansgrange Cemetery Co Dublin and my father in Shanganagh Cemetery South Co. Dublin. I picked up your query / post a year on as my kids are building a family tree. Do you have a particular connection ?

Hello JamKav

I was not expecting a reply to my query after such a long time. The information you provided was very helpful. Do you know what date your grandmother Nora died, I think James died in 1993.
Your grandmother was Frances Nora Monahan, born in Dublin 2 Dec 1896. She is the daughter of my great uncle John Monahan. They are all part of the Monahan family tree I have on Ancestry.com which includes your father Paul and his sisters.

Kind regards

Hi Arizona Boy,

That's amazing and delighted to connect. I can tell you that of Nora's children, Hilary and Noelle are still alive and well. In your list, the first born was Oonagh not Donagh as listed. Hilary and her husband Ted have the best grasp of the family tree that I've seen so far, having spent years researching, so I can point them your way. They have a wealth of old photographs including the Monahan girls and their mother Fanny. From those I've seen they were quite well to do and glamorous in their youth. I knew them all; Olive, Elsie, Sheila and obviously Nora. Olive lived all of her working life in the UK. In her latter years she lived in Margate, Kent in the UK. Sheila also lived in Stoke Newington in North London when she died. My father attended her funeral but I cannot recollect the date. Elsie lived with Noelle's family for years and passed away in Dublin - again no recall on the year but in late 1970's or early 1980s. You may have all this information but there you go.

So John Monahan (my great grandfather) had a brother or sister who was your grandparent - is that correct?

Nora's maternal line is of particular interest to me as I believe her mother, 'Fanny' (married a man with a surname of Fitzpatrick), has a lineage back through Northern Ireland, Scotland and ultimately to France. Hilary and Ted have established this line. I also understand that Elsie carried an old French Huguenot name of 'de Maziere' which I'd like to include in the names of my soon to be born son and fourth child.

Anyway to answer your question, James Anthony passed away on 30th April 1994, I was at his bedside. He was 92. Nora passed away some years before, Hilary will have the detail but I think it was  either 1980 or 1981 and I believe she was 83/84. I attended both funerals so I know the location of their grave ( they were interred in the same plot). I hope this helps you further.

I was interested in your comments/post about Major James Laing also, whom I believe is in our family line. Would you be able to outline the connection if you have this information please ?

Many thanks

James

I must correct an error in my previous post - 'Fanny' of course married John Monahan. Fanny's mother, Nora's grandmother, I don't have her name, whom I believe married a chap named Fitzpatrick. Apologies. JK
