Title: The Training College, Darlington - Anyone know of it?
Post by: Shiny1 on Saturday 14 July 18 08:34 BST (UK)
Hi All,

I have found a relative's WW1 record and on it he gives his wife's address in 1916 as the training college, Darlington.

Her name was Georgina Hall (nee English) and I have in the back of my mind she was training to be a teacher although I'm not sure where I got that from.

I was just wondering if anyone had heard of it or knew if there is anywhere there may still be records for it?

Thanks very much,

Michael

Darlington Local Studies may be able to help.

https://www2.darlington.gov.uk/web/arena/local-and-family-history

There is a contact email address at the bottom of the page, on the left.

Chris Lloyd, Chief Features Writer at the Northern Echo, may be another source of info.  He writes a weekly feature in the Darlington & Stockton Times (NE's sister paper) called Looking Back and also does Echo Memories.

Darlington Arts Centre is now being converted into residential flats :(

Have just thought (doesn't happen very often!) but that was unusual at that time. I remember researching a friend's mother who had trained as a teacher in the 1930's. She qualified, had a teaching job, was offered promotion to headmistress in the 1940's. Then she married. That was the end of her career, as upon marriage she was required to resign.

Different times, different attitudes, but from a present day perspective it seems a terrible waste.

Fiddlerslass, that pins it down nicely, thank you very much.

Boo, I think she may have been there before their marriage, who knows what happened after the war.
