Title: Rubbathan 1725
Post by: BronwenS on Monday 16 July 18 00:00 BST (UK)
Kia ora

Looking for information on the Rubbathan's.  I have some but am not sure that I am completely on the right track and if I am how I could ascertain which couple are the parents of Thomas.  I am really interested in what these people did for a living.  My mother always said she came from 'peasant stock'!  If you can fill in any blanks that would be great.

Many thanks to the many people who supply information to me and others on this great site.

Many thanks Alberbury.

I am really surprised to see their status and wonder whether I have it all wrong, my late mother was certain they were all peasants.

I have just joined the Shropshire local history society in the hope of gleaning more information about the Rubbathans.  My grandfather was a Jones, his sibling was born in 1866 and in 1875 they emigrated from Shropshire and my grandfather was born a year later.

However I cannot find them on the 1871 census   Nor can I find any register of the two children who died in infancy  - see their names below.

In 1861 Ann was living with her parents in the upper cottage in Pitchford.

Ann Williams wife of Thomas Emmanuel Jones, mother of Ernest (my grandfather)
b.1841 Feb 21 Berrington, Shropshire, Eng, (reg.)
m.1865 Aug 25 Thomas Emmanual Jones, Eng.
d.1919 Sept 23 Oxford, Christchurch, NZ (photo of gravestone)
1866 Arthur Jones
Frederick Jones – did not survive infancy - haven’t found
Winifred Jones - did not survive infancy - haven’t found

My motjher has this piece of information below:
RUBATHAN (1762) colonel, regiment of Earl of Powys in duke of Wellington army – frost bitten while on sentry duty and lost both legs.  Granted pension – farmed, lived Montgomeryshire

I see the Shukers in this and their connection to the Rubbathans - I have been looking through these registers.  The last entry here is one of my line.

You need to provide marriage details..
What's the source of the births/deaths of Frederick and Winifred.

For some reason (senior moment??) I posted death details of Arthur. It should have been Frederick -

Hi

1.  I haven't managed to find the source for the marriage date of Anne Williams and Thomas Emmanual Jones - it maybe that my mother gave me the date but unlikely - I have looked through my papers but can't find anything.

2.  I have a photo of the pair of them with their son Arthur taken in Manchester - but I have no date on it.  Arthur looks about 6 years old.  You had found the other two children for me and the first one was born in Salford Manchester so the 1971 census was almost certainly taken there - I have done some searching today but not found it.  I have put the entry from Family search at the very bottom.

3. A major stuff up of mine that I have only just noticed and which will mean I am further back on to the wrong Rubbathan lot.  William Rubbathan  b.1760 Feb 22   - BORN THE YEAR BEFORE HE FATHERED A CHILD!

4. The entry from Family Search is here:
Name:   Edward Rubbathan
Gender:   Male
Christening Date:   22 Aug 1762
Christening Date (Original):   22 AUG 1762
Christening Place:   FRODESLEY,SHROPSHIRE,ENGLAND
Father's Name:   Wm. Rubbathan
Mother's Name:   Mary

I know there are miracles but this is taking things a little too far.
