Title: Rubbathan 1725
Post by: BronwenS on Monday 16 July 18 00:03 BST (UK)
Kia ora

Looking for information on the Rubbathan's.  I have some but am not sure that I am completely on the right track and if I am how I could ascertain which couple are the parents of Thomas.  I am really interested in what these people did for a living.  My mother always said she came from 'peasant stock'!  If you can fill in any blanks that would be great.

Many thanks to the many people who supply information to me and others on this great site.

In case you still don't have Edward's date of death, it was 27 February 1842 according to the oath made by daughter Hannah for the granting of Letters of Administration.

The papers can be viewed on FindMyPast  https://search.findmypast.co.uk/record?id=GBPRS/STAFF/007623760/00566&parentid=GBPRS/STAFF/WILLS/491871

That is great many thanks - I had just put a new query about him in see below.
I don't have access to that site to see this but might need to take out a monthly sub.
Can you tell me what the 'Letters of Administration' means, is this like his will or probate?
That means I might be able to find him in the census which would be excellent.
Did he die in Frodesley?

Thanks again
regards Bronwen, CHCH, NZ

My late mother told me this.
Edward Rubbathan was a Colonel in the regiment of Earl of Powys in Duke of Wellington’s army – frost bitten while on sentry duty and lost both legs.  Granted a pension – farmed and lived in Montgomeryshire.  Edward was born in 1762 Aug 22 Frodesley, Shropshire and married (1792 Sept 2nd) Jane Colley, Frodesley, Shropshire Eng. (copy of banns 12 Aug 1792)

It's a kind of probate in cases where there is no will.

The death was registered in Montgomery Registration District (https://www.ukbmd.org.uk/reg/districts/montgomery.html=). (According to the GRO online index, he was 88. ). The probate court record (Edward Rubbatham) says that he was  "late of Frodesley".

There is an Edward Rubbathan in Welshpool in the 1841 census, aged 85. That would be the right area for a death registered in Montgomery.

Thanks - not him  I don't think.  Someone sent me this and it adds up:
Edward Rubathan/Rubothon 75 Ag. Lab. Row, Frodesley, Edward, 25, ag lab, Hannah 30, Christinah 20, Jane 3, Edward

I already had all the details of his youngest son Edward who married Christinah and their first two children.

The family which seems to have so many names:
Rubottom / Rubathan / Rubothon / Rubbatham / Rowbotham / Rowbathon
I understood came from Powys - I visited the place in about 1998 and met the 8th Earl who had visited NZ.

Thanks for all your help.

If he was an agricultural labourer at the age of 75, I think we can assume that he had legs and was not in receipt of a colonel's pension!

Indeed - I hadn't thought about that aspect of it - I was on another thought/track and wondered whether I had the right one because someone sent me a link for a will for an Edward Rubbathan.  But I have looked at that on-line now (great website the Welsh library) and I am sure it isn't 'my' Edward because the names of the children are not what I have.

Also you had told me that Hannah signed an oath and that all makes sense and they lived in Frodesley.

I am working on two fronts:
The first one - which I think we have sorted.
Edward Rubbathan husband of Jane Colley
b.1762 Aug 22 parish of Frodesley, reg. Atcham, Shropshire
m.1792 Sept 2 Jane Colley, Frodesley, Shropshire Eng. (copy of banns 12 Aug 1792)
d.1842 Mar>May Atcham, Shropshire, Eng. (Rubberthan)
Census1841
Edward Rubathan/Rubothon 75 Ag. Lab. Row, Frodesley, Edward, 25, Ag Lab, Hannah 30, Christinah 20, Jane 3, Edward 1

Rubbatham   Edward   —   1842   1842   Staffordshire, Dioceses Of Lichfield And Coventry Wills And Probate 1521-1860   Frodesley, Shropshire, England
according to the oath made by daughter Hannah for the granting of Letters of Administration.
The papers can be viewed on FindMyPast  https://search.findmypast.co.uk/record?id=GBPRS/STAFF/007623760/00566&parentid=GBPRS/STAFF/WILLS/491871

And Edwards father, Thomas whose marriage bonds are held in the National Library of Wales who I have emailed to see if I can join to access that document and possibly establish who Thomas'  parents are.

Possible parents of Thomas Rubbathan
Gulielmi & Ann Rubbathan or ) both had children named Thomas baptised
William & Ann Rubbathan       ) on the same day in Berriew
1774 Nov. 21, Edward Shuker, of Cardington, Farmer, & Ann Rubbathan, of Frodesley, sp., lic ... mar.
1778 May 1, Isaac Jones, of Forden, & Elizabeth Rubbathan, lic ... ma

1725 Rubottom / Rubathan / Rubothon / Rubbatham / Rowbotham / Rowbathon / Rubaton
Thomas Rubbathan/Rowbathon husband of Sarah James
b.1725 Oct 10 Berriew, Montgomeryshire, Wales
m.1761 June 22 Aberhafesb, Montgomery, Montgomeryshire (copy of banns)
d.

The marriage bond, held at the Nation Library, is Rowbathon, which is what it looks like on the register.
It might be worth ordering a copy because it may have details of parents - http://discover.library.wales

•  Title:
Rowbathon, Thomas, bach., yeoman, Montgomery, Montgomeryshire to James, Sarah, sp., Aberhafesb, Montgomeryshire : 1761 Jun 20.
•  Is Part Of: Marriage bonds, ca. 1690-1837 99230987302419
•  Description: Marriage at Aberhafesb.
marriage bond.
•  Creation Date: 1761

Many thanks for your help and interest.

Just to say, Bronwen, don't get too excited about the marriage bond. The ones that I've had only mention a parent if one or both are under age and, even then, not always.

I've obtained quite a few from the National Library.
