Gerrard Gourley was born abt 1800 in Clonleigh, Donegal, the son of John. He had three sons and six daughters with Margaret Sterrit. The children were babtised in Ballindrait Presbyterian Church, Parish of Clonleigh, Co Donegal. Their lived at Gortin. Margaret Sterrit, his wife was babtised in Inver, Co Donegal on the 6th Sep 1807. Gerrard Gourley 2nd marriage was to Jane Rippy, marriage registered in Urney, Strabane, Tyrone, on 6 June 1850. Bear in mind death registration only started in Ireland in 1864. If any of the family died before that, there’s no death certificate to find.

Thanks for all the information. Would Ballindrait Presbyterian Church hold records of deaths before 1864.

Would Ballindrait Presbyterian Church hold records of deaths before 1864.
No. As a general rule Presbyterians don’t keep burial records, and looking at the PRONI guide, none are mentioned for Ballindrait. Unless there is a gravestone, or a mention in a local paper, there may be no record of a pre 1864 death at all.
Ballindrait Presbyterian has the following early records (copies held at PRONI):
Baptisms, 1819-61 and 1873-1923; marriages, 1827-8 and 1845-1901.

You might want to follow up the following mention in the 1898 Police Gazette for Victoria Australia, it was a Mrs. A. McCarron of Ashley Street, Rangiora, Canterbury in New Zealand seeking the whereabouts of her brother Jerrard Gourley, Irish, about 60 years of age, stout build and pock marked, last heard of 6 years previously living near Melbourne and said to have valuable property.
Similar follow-up maybe for the Gerard Gourley mentioned in a Derry newspaper in January-February 1911, he was named in a notice relating to the administration of his estate and was described as late of Bulla, Victoria, Australia, having died on 27 August 1901 at O'Shannessy Street, Sunbury (Melbourne) - the notice mentioned a daughter Mary by his first marriage.

Further to above, note the following marriage of Alexander McCarron to Ann Jane Gourley of Gortin in 1875, father's forename difficult, but could be something like Jaret?

Oh thank you both for the information. Anne Jane Gourley married Alexander McCarron on 2nd Dec 1875, she had a brother called Gerard/ Jerrard. Her husband ALEXANDER MCCARRON died on February 7, 1900, in Canterbury, New Zealand, when he was 52 years old. What site is the 1898 police Gazette on so I may get a copy of it. The death of Gerard would appear to be the same man. It looks like a number of the Gourley family immigrated to Australia and New zealand. maybe I would be better trying to find the children's marriage records.

Leaving aside the promising aspects of the Gazette notice - ie. its linkage of my posted 1875 marriage of Anne Jane (Gourley) McCarron to an Irish brother with a fairly distinctive name, of the right sort of age, in the Melbourne vicinity - I think that the administrator's targetting of a Derry newspaper for the 1911 notice could also be telling.
The Gazette notice is available on the Ancestry website, pm me if you have trouble finding it.

Gerard Gourley, sister was looking for him 2 years before he died in 1901 while he was living in Victoria Australia. Gerard was married twice and Mary is the daughter of his first wife. Mary was left a share of the will, but she or anyone on her behalf did not get in touch with the administrators of the will. 'It is therefore the intention of the curator to proceed with the will', as though Mary had died before her father. The newspaper article was written on the 10 December 1910, so 9 years after Gerard's death. It looks like Gerrard had lost contact with his family in Ireland and sister in New Zealand.
The Victoria Wills & Probate Transcription that is on Find My Past I got stuck on viewing a copy of the will online. copyright image removed
It says that:
Only some wills and probate records are digitised but records 1841-1925 can be viewed online;
So I should be able to view the record online. The link takes me to the two records below for Gerard Gourley and then I get stuck.

I'm not sure that the relevant experts would frequent the Donegal subforum, you may want to consider posting to the Australian area of the forum for that specific query (and to find out about Gerard in Australia more generally since things have clearly taken that direction), you can always link back to this one for background.

Gerard's name
Recorded on the marriage cert of his daughter Sarah Gourley, living at Bishop Street, Londonderry; Gerard Gourley, Farmer; date married 28 Mar 1873
Recorded on the marriage cert of his daughter Ann Jane Gourley, living at Gortin, Donegal; Jarot Gourley, looks like deceased on married cert; date married 2nd Dec 1875
Recorded on the marriage cert of his son Robert Gourley, living at Kirkminster, Lifford, Donegal; Jered Gourley, Farmer; marriage date 6th April 1877
Recorded on the death cert of his daughter Sarah Gourley (Morrison) living in Scotland; Jerrold Gourley, Farmer; deceased; death cert date 11 Mar 1884
Recorded on the marriage cert of his son James Gourley, living at Knockrawer, Castlefin, Donegal; Jarard Gourley, Farmer; married on 27 Aug 1913
Two queries is he likely to have been alive in 1879 as he owed £1.1.0 Poor Rate up to 14 May 1879 or could his name be still on the record as the head of the house and already have died? What credence can i give to Gerard's details on his children's marriage certs.
Thanks for any information received. Angela

Thankyou for all your information Margaret Gourley and Charles Stewart were my Gr Grandparents. One of Gerrard's daughters by his first wife Margaret Starrett. The spelling of these names change quite a bit.
I have had a trawl through various records and my hypothesis is that looking at the children’s records from his 2nd marriage, in March 1873 , Sarah Gourley, leaves Castlefin to live at Bishop Street in the city of Londonderry, she is 21 years of age and as far as I know the eldest of Jane’s (his second wife) children. Her father may have been alive in March as she adds Farmer to his profession on her marriage certificate. Robert Gourley is 17 years old and the following year, 1874 receives a fine for not having a dog licence. We know Gerrard purchased dog licences from the records. In June 1875 at the Irish Petty Sessions, he kicked an assailant on his mother’s land, which he was fined for. Robert didn’t appear to get into trouble before this. In referring to his mother's land as oppose to his father's land may be relevant. By 1877 he is 21 years of age, living in Kirkminster and married. In 1878 he was witness to his mother allowing farm animals to stray on to a neighbours land, which Jane was fined for. Ann Jane is 15 years of age in 1873 and a couple of years later at 17 years she married she added that Jarot, her father is deceased on her marriage certificate. Which is proof I feel that he died before she married in 1875. She had her first 2 daughters christened in Castlederg, so presumable she was living in that area before she immigrated to New Zealand in 1879. The youngest boy was 11 years old in 1873, by 1881 he is a carpenter on a ship and living with Sarah Morrison his eldest sister in Scotland. Although he returns to live with his mother in Ireland by 1901.
I think Gerrard died in 1873, although an order for non payment of £1.1 shilling was made against him on Oct 1878, or he may have already died although his name may have been still ‘head of the house’ similar to the old valuation records for N Ireland
I don’t think the family were good at recording things so Gerrard was probably still registered as the Head of the House after his death. I haven’t seen the Valuation Revision Books for Donegal, but I feel that the family may not have changed the name when Gerrard died.
Unfortunately they are on microfilm. They may give us an idea when he moved to the area.
