Louisa, there are various possible reasons you're seeing this message. One could be that the site you are looking for is not responding. I'm not being sarcastic, but if there is a problem with one particular site you will get this message. If you are getting the message while you try to access several different sites then the problem could either be with your internet service provider, in which case you should check with them, they might even have a service status message on there own website, or it could be that there is a problem within your house. Is your modem switched on and plugged in and are all the cables connected? If you managed to isolate the problem to your own house, try switching off the modem for 5 minutes, then switch it back on and wait 3 or 4 minutes before trying to access the same sites as before. These suggestions will rule out most simple problems. I'm sure you will get more wise words from others.
Update, embarrassed, two seconds later. Of course as you have managed to post this message here the problem is not with your modem and you are not getting it with many different sites. It is quite possible that the server belonging to the website you are trying to access is either busy, down for maintenance, or otherwise not available. Try and get somebody else to try it or list the name here full stop

Louisa, are you a MAC or a PC user? Which operating system are you using, e.g Windows 10 etc. Which browser are you using? How long have you had this problem? Did it start after a software update or any other issue?
I am not saying that with this knowledge i would necessarily know the answer but it may help others to come up with a solution for you.

PC and Windows 7
If I log off sometimes it comes back but it is infuriating to keep on logging on and off to be honest
Thank you for your replies

What browser are you using?
I use Windows 7 and Firefox, and I also get this problem.
Nearly always solved by closing all Firefox sessions (I do this from Task Manager), and starting Firefox again! :-\
Looking at Task Manager when it happens, it always appears to be Desktop Windows Manager using huge amounts of CPU time?!
I heard a rumour that Microsoft "tweaked" DWM under Windows 7 to be less efficient, in order to "persuade" people to Windows 10?

Hello Louisa,
Is it just the one particular website or is it all websites?

I have had trouble getting into this, the last couple of days. Perhaps it is me, and not the site?

I checked it and posted the link ?
There used to be a security certificate "issue" . . . . .
Checked it again AND it does not respond ::)
I will look for another . . . . .

No. The Windows 10 one is just as bad. It can hog a whole processor for minutes at a time, while no useful processing is being done.
The "website not responding" problem seems to appear whichever browser is in use. It's probably related to the huge number of ads shoved at us these days. Most of them have some sort of associated script which has to be interpreted by the browser, and a large proportion are horribly inefficient.
Once I have reached the announcement (the last time was yesterday), it's time to close down every mention of the browser and start again. The quickest way is to save any open documents and do Shutdown - Restart. This never fails to get me control again.
