Hello,
Sophia is recorded as being the wife of Joseph Barrington and living in Sutton Benger in 1851. Her birthplace is given as 'Hufcut' on FamilySearch. Can anyone view the record and try and make sense of it. I'm trying to locate a christening for her. She was surnamed Webb before her marriage in 1827, and died in 1856.
I'd appreciate any help!
Adam

Maybe Uffcott?
Will have a look.
-
Thanks! I'm not really knowledgeable about Wiltshire and its geography other than the villages I've researched, so I'll leave this in your capable hands Millie ;D
-
Steady ;D
I can say one of the witnesses to the marriage in 1827 was a Thomas Webb.
-
Thanks! Possible family member then. I know she had an illegitimate daughter, Sarah, in Bremhill in 1818. Sarah married James Provis in Christian Malford in 1840, and died in Bremhill in 1844. James remarried to her half-sister, Priscilla Barrington (daughter of Sophia), in Sutton Benger 1845.

Sarah Webb gives her father as Richard Webb labourer when she marries in 1840. She also says she is 25 same age as her husband.
-
Yes, I saw that. Her age at death is 26, which leads to 1818. Only christening then in Bremhill is illegitimate. No trace of a Richard Webb. The connection to the Barringtons makes it almost certain that Sarah Webb was illegitimate.

It goes like this:
Sarah Webb, daughter of Sophia Webb, christened in 1818 in Bremhill
Joseph Barrington marries Sophia Webb in Sutton Benger in 1827
Sarah Webb marries James Provis in Christian Malford in 1840
Sarah Provis dies in 1844 in Bremhill
James Provis remarries to Priscilla Barrington (daughter of Joseph and Sophia Barrington) in Sutton Benger in 1845

Right I see. No luck with a Christening for Sophia Webb or Thomas Webb.
It certainly says "Hufcut" on census which sounds like Uffcott but :-\
I wonder if Hufcut appears for anyone else on a census.
-
No problem Millie, thanks for looking!
-
You're right! Uffcutt is part of Broad Hinton, and there's a christening there!
-
Parents Joseph Webb and Rebecca Hughes, who married there in 1789. Can you find the exact date?
-
17 August 1789
-
Thanks! You've helped greatly as usual ;D
