Hello,
I am trying to find a Richard Davenport and his family pre 1910 but not getting very far.
I know he was born approx. 1889 in Manchester and married Elizabeth Tidswell 25/06/1910 in St. Silas, Manchester. Marriage certificate states his Dad to be named James and a witness as Annie Davenport.
In 1911, I have him at 8 Yarwoods buildings, Manchester with his wife and 1st Child (Hilda) and he later dies in WW1 but I cannot find his WW1 admission papers, nor his census records pre 1911 or any trace of the other Davenports.
At Marriage, both Richard and Elizabeth are at 50 Ainsworth st, Manchester. Having searched the census for this address hoping to find family, it looks as though records for no. 50 are missing in 1901 and 1911.
I have tried searching for Richard, Annie and James with surname variations D-a\e-v-o\e-nport but cannot prove any of them to be the correct family.
Would greatly appreciate any help in tracing him or his parents and siblings.

Have you already ruled out the 12yr old Richard Davenport b Manchester living with mother Jane plus a number of siblings in Manchester in 1901
There is a daughter Hannah who could possibly be the witness Annie

I'd had a look at this but tracing back, in 1891 the Father of the children is a George Davenport so I had ruled them out due to the Fathers name not being James.

I suspect this is the RIngley Davenports in that village in 1901 - doesn't look like Richard would fit in anywhere (nor is there a Richard in this family in1891)

Think I've sussed it - have spent quite a long time today on this knotty problem, partly caused by births not being registered, change of name (on census anyway), incorrect ages and birthplaces!
Richard Davenport bc.1889 is indeed the one previously mentioned on here with mother Jane (in 1901) and George and Jane in (in 1891).
Stepping back a bit, James Davenport 19 Hawker, son of William Davenport, Carter married Jane Wheeler 19, dau. of Samuel Wheeler, Boatman, on 3/6/1880 Ancoats, St. Jude, Lancashire.
Can't find them in 1881 but 1891 shows them with 4 children all born Manchester:
William bc.1881 - birth reg'd Dec.80 Prestwich - mmn Wheeler (think he died 1891-1901)
Samuel bc.1883 - birth reg'd Sept.83 Prestwich - mmn Wheeler
Hannah bc.1888 - not registered
Richard bc.1889 - not registered
followed by the following by 1901:
Mary J. bc.1891 - not registered
Alice bc.1893 - not registered
Emily bc.1896 - not registered - believe died between 1901 and 1911
Lydia bc.1899 - not registered - believe died between 1901 and 1911
There was another child who died - John James birth reg'd Mar.1886 Chorlton (mmn Wheeler), death Mar.1887 Manchester - making 9 children in all.
Hannah is Hannah in 1891 and 1901 but is 'Annie' on the next census - believe it is she who was a witness at Richard's marriage.
I seriously think that they didn't register deaths either - can find no obvious death for father James (or even George) nor for son William and daughters Emily and Lydia!! No 'events' registered after death of son John James in 1887.

William Devonport married Sarah Harrop 24/2/1845 Staleybridge, Cheshire - children were:

John birth Sept.1848 Ashton under Lyne - mmn Harrop
Mary Ann birth Sept.1850 Manchester - mmn Harrop
William (b.1851 in 1861, b.1855 in 1871??)
Andrew birth Dec.1852 Mancheter - mmn Harrop
Josiah birth Mar.1859 Manchester - mmn Harrop
James birth Sept.1862 Manchester - mmn Harrop
I suspect you are going to have 'fun' working on the Davenport's - be prepared for name variations and also for the inaccurate ages often given.

So George is an alternate name for James? I can see most of this fits and even the witness signature of Annie on Richards marriage looks very much like that on her own.
The Richard born to Jane was baptised as Richard Henry - I can't see that he used his middle name at all but that's not so unusual.
My last concern is that at Richards marriage, his dad is listed as a labourer and named James but on all other records they use the name George and he is a grocer/hawker. Do you think there is enough here to wash over that?

I feel absolutely certain that James and George are the same person - sons William b.1880 and Samuel b.1883 are with 'George' and Jane in 1891, and birth registrations shows mmn as Wheeler. The Davenport married to Jane Wheeler is James, Hawker - no idea why he started calling himself George, or why they stopped registering the births of their children.
To add to that, 'your' Richard Davenport first 'appears' when the Richard, son of James/George and Jane, 'disappears' from the family.
Of course, I can't force you to believe me but feel sure I am right.
