Hi
Need some help please :)
I have a John Patrick Doherty b 1882 wolstanton.
He married Rosalie Bradshaw 1922 wolstanton (spelt Dougherty)
Rosalie died 1939
In the ,1939 census John is widower living with Herbert and Francis Bradshaw.
I am trying to find John Patrick Doherty in 1891 and 1911 with no luck
Any help would be appreciated
Sue

His birth registration shows mother as Conroy.
This would fit a marriage of Patrick Doherty and Catherine Conroy in 1881.

Do you have him in 1901? If so where? What was his occupation on marriage?

Oh that's great, is the marriage for Patrick and Catherine in s.o.t ?
-
There's a Patrick Doherty death in the area in Q4 1882 - he's aged 63 though
-
That would be sad it would have mentioned they were only married ,12 months and John would never have known his father.
Is there anyway off finding out when they came to England. ie passenger lists ?
-
Staffordshirebmd say that the 1881 marriage was a "Civil Marriage (Wolstanton)". The 1882 death was recorded in Tunstall sub-district, age given as 62.

Unlikely to be passenger lists. Ireland was part of UK. They may have crossed the sea several times. Many Irishmen first went to England as seasonal labourers, returning home for winter.
You need to look for John's parents on 1881 England census and earlier to work out how long they'd been there.

Another Patrick Doherty marriage from Staffordshire BMD: 1875 to Winifred McGeaver at Stoke.
Doherty birth registrations 1877 & 1879, mmn McGiver/McGever in Hanley district.
It occurred to me that if the 1881 death was the correct one and he was 62, he may have been married before. I didn't see a death of a Winifred Doherty on either Staffs BMD or GRO.

I was thinking along the same lines he may have married before, I ordered the marriage cert yesterday for his 1881 marriage to Catherine to see what it tells me. Ordered it from Newcastle , had email saying it's Stoke so got to re order today 😥
