In one of my many tangents from my own research I have been trying to work out how a gentleman is related to Robert Burns.
His name is Sir James Shaw Baronet (1754-1864), he is from Kilmarnock and his statue stands there. According to various source inc his obituary he was related to Robert Burns the poet and as a result supported his wife after Burns died in 1796.
Through Burkes Peerage, Debretts and Scotland's people I have so far established that James Shaw was born in 1756 in Riccarton Kilmarnock to John Shaw and Helen Sillers/Sellars. John was the son of John Shaw and Margaret Woodburn.
Anyone any idea how he ma have been relate to Burns, he appears to have been the son of William Burness and Agnes Broun.

I think the claim is similar to an "Ancestry" copy and paste family tree assumption. ie someone has said it, it's been copied and printed/displayed, so it must be true.
I would look at the relationship between Jean Breekenridge and Sir James Shaw, then look at the relationship between Jean Breekenridge and Robert Burns.

pharma, check the dates for James Shaw. Are you sure he lived to 110 years of age?
According to a tree on My Heritage Jean Breekenridge married either Gilbert Burns or John Burns. (Same tree.) Robert Burns had a brother Gilbert.
Robert Burns' funeral was on this day.

So it seems there was a connection with the Siller family friendship wise as well. Seems as if James Shaw got a lot of people a cadetship in India. He got my 3x grt grandfather one too which is why I started reading about him.

Yes, but I really need to stop researching other people and I'll get a lot further in my tree.

A great read is "Sikander Burnes!" by Craig Murray. Alexander Burnes from Montrose was the poet Burns cousin & a political officer with the East India Company, nepotism was rife in the EIC & Montrose guys were to the fore, including Alexanders brother James, a doctor on the staff.
