Title: Newcastle Upon Tyne looking for names of children
Post by: Finscar08 on Thursday 26 July 18 07:46 BST (UK)
Alexander Chicken = Maria Gascoigne m. 1922 Newcastle Upon Tyne
They had 9 children
The eldest child was called Dorothy Ann Chicken b.1924
I would be grateful if anyone could help me find who the other 8 children were.

Regards
Margaret

Welcome to rootschat

We are not allowed to post details on here of anyone who could still be living.  If you go to

https://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl
and put into birth search surname Chicken mmn Gascoigne it should list children of this marriage

ADDED you can also use that site to search for possible marriages

Welcome to RootsChat.

Using rosie99's method I can see 8 children between 1922 and 1936.

Welcome to RootsChat

Two children might also be registered with the mother's maiden name  Gascine   - possibly mistranscribed  :-\

This was my first post and I appreciate the replies to my query. I have looked up freebmd as advised and hope the children are correct that I have found. I think the first census some of these children would be on is 1931 which I believe would not be available until at least 2032. Are there any other sources I could check to confirm that I have the correct children without having to order copy Birth Certificates which may not belong to the family.

There is no census for 1931 it was destroyed by fire during WW2.  The 1939 pre war register is available on Ancestry & FindMyPast

The GRO index shows 11 possible children for the couple two of whom died in infancy
Deaths Dec qtr 1925
Chicken    Isabella M   age 0
Newcastle T.    10b   216

Deaths Jun qtr 1936
Chicken    Alexander   age  0
Newcastle T.    10b   86

Hi rosie99
I have looked at the 1939 registers and found a couple of people but it said on one record:
Joseph W Graham and 5 more people are on this record
1 more person who is officially closed
I have never done these records before and wanted to ask if I viewed these registers at my local library would I see the other 5 people on the record?
I assume the 1 more person who is officially closed record is because they are still alive.

I have also tried to look up the GRO indexes but it said Historic Birth and Death Records
 - Birth 1837 - 1917 and Death 1837 - 1957.
The Births would be from 1924.
Please can you tell me how you found the information in the GRO index of the 11 possible children?Sorry to sound stupid but I have not done either of these records before.
Regards
Margaret

The children were found using  https://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl - from 1913 the mother's maiden name is indicated in the birth registrations  - follow rosie99's instructions and use the start date of 1922 and the end date of 1936.

BumbleB many thanks for your reply. As you can see I thought I had to use GRO Index on the GRO site and not freebmd for the information. Thankyou for guiding me much appreciated.
On the 1939 Registers can I unlock the household at my library on Find My Past? I have not used these 1939 Registers before.

Sorry, I really don't know whether records can be unlocked at a library.

If your local library has access to either Ancestry or Find My Past yes you can view the household or "unlock" it this means you can view records that are open. You won't be able to view the one closed record you mentioned. This closed record will be open at some point in the future when the death of the person is proven or after the 100 year time limit is reached.

Thank you Blue for taking the time to reply. I will visit my local Library on Monday to look at the 1939 Registers. I have not done this research before so I am grateful for the help

I usually take a USB flash drive to my local library and save records to that. Ancestry allows you to share a record find which can be useful. Another way to save records is to attach and send them in an e-mail that you can access when you get home.

I think I found Maria on the 1939 register with possibly 3 of her children

Only 1 is shown but is showing as under school age  (and when you look up Mary Chicken born 1934 you are shown a birth with MMN of Gascoigne)

When did they start evacuating children from Newcastle - could the older ones have gone with the school? and that be why not on the system

You can order birth certificates with provisios - so you only want it if the mother is Maria etc - however if the name has a slight spelling difference you still won't get it - so if she's as Mariah that wouldnt be a match

Going the other way (because sometimes you need to go back to go forward)

Maria Gascoigne born 1900 in Newcastle - mmn Tear
Alexander Chicken born jan q 1901 in Tynemouth - mmn  Couley

Deaths
Alexander Chicken Sep 1976 born 26th Nov 1900 in Newcastle (fits with the birth)
Maria Chicken Dec 1977 born 11 Jun 1900 in Newcastle (also fits with the birth above)

Where did you find the mmn for Maria Gascoigne and Alexander Chicken?
Sorry to sound stupid but I have been searching freebmd and familysearch and I could not see it.
Am I looking in the wrong place?

From before 1911 you have to use https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/Login.asp to get mothers maiden name

You have to register but it's free

So Maria's parents are PROBABLY
Thomas Gascoigne and Isabella Tear who married in Newcastle in 1893

Alexanders are PROBABLY
William Edward McKee Chicken and Margaret Ann Couley who married in Newcastle in 1893

Most were evacuated in August 1939, a month prior to when the 1939 register was compiled, so yes they may well have been evacuated.

http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/NBL/Evacuation

Which, if you have time, is well worth a read to get an idea of how what a huge undertaking it was.

Hi Boo
Thank you for taking the time to send the information. I have looked at the Genuki link and it is fascinating how many children were evacuated and where they went. Certainly worth a read this link for anybody interested in the Evacuations.
Thank you once again.

I use Family Search extensively to find info. You need to sign up for a free account (only info required is a name and an email address).

https://www.familysearch.org
Along the top, click on Search: Records. On the search form, enter Alexander Chicken and click on Search.

Then use the filter options on the left hand side
Birthplace: UK & Ireland: England:Northumberland
Birth year: 1900

Then you will see a transcript of Alexander's baptism record.

Click on the icon to the far right (looks like a piece of paper with lines on it) and you get this:
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NFGC-WYL

Which gives a transcript of the barebones details - there may be more in the original record.

Click the down arrow next to Document Information and it says the info was transcribed from LDS film no. 1564752, item 5 page 13

Go to Search: Catalogue and put that film no into the search box, it brings up a list of what is on that microfilm - click on Items 3-5: Parish registers of Walker 1848-1941 and you get this:

https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog/469263?availability=Family%20History%20Library

Third item on that list shows that this set has been digitised (camera icon on the far right)
Unfortunately this is one of the record sets that, because of the agreement with the holders of the original registers, the camera icon also has a key icon, which means its only viewable if you visit an LDS Family History centre, unless you are a church member.

Rinse and repeat the above for the Parents' names - I usually just use first names in the search so William Chicken  then spouse Margaret, filter by marriage place and a rough time frame.

Rinse and repeat again for surname Chicken (no first name) parents William and Margaret, then filter by birthplace and time frame may well lead you to siblings for Alexander.

Some records are digitised and viewable from home, it all depends on the agreement the LDS have with the holders of the records. Its always worth checking the catalogue to see if you can see it from home.

If not and you are not near enough to visit the archives which hold the records, look here:
https://www.familysearch.org/locations/ to see if there is a FHC near you. I am not a church member but visit our local one about twice a month. I take a list of what I want to see and am allowed to print the record or save it to a usb stick. All free, the various centres I have used over the years are staffed by volunteers who have been welcoming and helpful. Their pcs also have access to sites such as Ancestry, FindMyPast etc.

Apologies if you already know all that  - and it looks quite complicated written down but the where and how to search is, in my view, really useful. Once you've searched for a few you can do it very quickly and get a 'feel' for it.

Hi Boo
I have looked at Family Search before probably like so many other people and never used Family Search to it's full potential. The View Button, Camera Icon, LDS Film Number etc hold so much information. If you had not sent me this post I would of never investigated Family Search in such detail. Thank you for helping me with this as I am sure anybody else reading this may also question if they are looking at everything on Family Search available. Thank you once again.

Margaret
