I'm looking for the name of the Roman Catholic Church in or near Coolbawn. There doesn't seem to be any references online to any churches in the area
Thanking you in anticipation.
Margaret.

Which Coolbaun?

I've found the family on the 1911 census in Coolbawn, Derrycastle, Templeachally and that's all I know sorry.

Thank you so much.
I think what's confusing me is that I thought there would be a church in most towns.
-
Thank you so much.
I think what's confusing me is that I thought there would be a church in most towns.
....but not one in every townland
-
Sorry I'm really ignorant with Irish genealogy my Irish ancestors are all from Dublin and it's so different. What is a townland.
-
No problem....am same myself with non Irish stuff.
A townland can be a field out in country or a few fields.... ;D ;D not near a town!
-
That is so funny you've made my day. I'll try and find the church somehow.
-
;D ;D
-
I posted a Link... https://www.johngrenham.com/records/church.php?civilparishid=2299&civilparish=Templeachally&search_type=full
https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0239 is the Parish registers on that link if yours were RC
-
I've used the NLI ones earlier but it doesn't give a clue to the name of the church.
I'm helping a friend who has mostly Irish ancestors and I've found such a difference in what records are still around but what throws me is all the different spellings for the same place. I'll have to learn Gaelic it would be a lot easier. LOL
If you need any help anytime just let me know I'm pretty much au fait with genealogy in a few countries.
-
You are making things difficult for yourself!!
Go to https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/civil-search.jsp
and just put Surname in
and Nenagh as district then hit Search!!
On left you can select 1800's and even Decades or Births etc
-
The Indexes to the Civil Records of Irish Births, Deaths and Marriages date from 1864 with non-Roman Catholic Marriages recorded from 1845.
The years covered by the release of the historic Indexes to the Civil Records of Births, Marriages and Deaths are:
Births: 1864 to 1916
Marriages: 1845* to 1941
Deaths: 1864 to 1966
-
I've tried that before and for some reason I keep getting 'no results' I've had all my family trying it and they get the same. I'll give it another go I won't give up.
-
What Surname?
-
Its John and Julia Quigley but on the 1901 census his wife is called Judith.

-
I think it's Nenagh because that's the place my friend remembered going to as a child.

I cannot see any baptisms for their children on the available RC indexes.
Debra :)

Wow that's amazing and it's the correct family thank you so much.
I still don't understand how Judith becomes Julia. I know it's Julia because their son William named his first child Julia.

I only looked for Dan!!
-
This is getting weird, John names his wife as Judy and then Judith and then Julia. What the heck was her real name or did he have early onset dementia?
-
This looks like Patrick's baptism on 16 April and she is now Johanna.

They are just different versions of the same name - it is not unusual.

I honestly hadn't spotted the data about children. Is it on the census and I've missed it?
-
You would need to source the baptisms for children after Patrick elsewhere.

Yes
-
I'll look at the links in the morning.
I can't believe how much help I've had tonight it's much appreciated. Thank you both.
-
What source names the wife of John as 'Julia'?
I see that it is the 1911 census.
Debra :)
-
The 1911 census and their son William's birth record. I kept seeing Quigley birth's with a MMN of Julia Quigley and I thought that was the right family.
-
Strangley there does not appear to be a matching index for both in the marriages but there is a match for call numbers in two different districts

That's really odd I wonder if they got married in both Parishes for some reason? What a mystery this family's records are.

Dathai
I've found the baptism of William Quigley (the line I'm searching) on familysearch.org on the 11th July 1878 parents John and Julia Quigley. Could you please check it out for me if you have time to see if it's the same couple as the other baptisms.
This man is a complete mystery he's not on either the 1901 or 1911 censuses in Ireland or England but I know he ended up in Manchester and married in 1915. I found a possible William Quigley on the 1901 census in Manchester but I can't prove it's the same person.

Hi, I have watching this thread, if the 1878 birth is correct, Coolbawn, PORTROE.
This link show Coolbawn Quay.
https://www.coolbawnquay.com/location/
if you zoom out you will see Portroe, this is the place stated in the Birth record.
I thought very confusing years ago when we stayed in a B&B to have so many names the same.
Someone mentioned Scariff, that is on the opposite side of Lough Derg and is in County Clare, But having said that the Diocese for the area comes under Killaloe, Killaloe being at the neck of Lough Derg opposite Ballina (County Tipperary)
It took me a while to work out...... town lands, Parishes, Diocese, Barony and DED's.
Great fun though isn't it!
Maggsie
-
Yes the 1878 births is correct!
I mentioned Scariff DISTRICT (NOT TOWN!!)
IF YOU LOOK AT https://www.swilson.info/regdistmap.php?gregdistid=141
you can see how near the reg OFFICE/dispensary at Annacarriga is....
-
Oh my head's spinning now. :D
It's going to take me ages to really understand the layout of all the different districts.
Why did people have to travel so far to have their children baptised?
-
Thanks Maggsie
I can't seem to grasp the best way to address this query with all the different ways to approach it but I'll get there in the end.
-
Reg offices were only roughly 10 miles apart so people were within 5 miles of one and used to short 5 mile strolls!
-
People in Canada or Australia often had a decent 100 miles stroll to town!!
-
I so admire our Irish ancestors for the adversity they met head on and dealt with on a day to day basis.
I don't mind a long walk but 100 miles would put me off big time.
-
I don't mind a long walk but 100 miles would put me off big time.
Especially when one forgets what they went to town for!! ;D ;D

You've got my sense of humour. Love your response.
