I have an ancestors Thomas Binks who was in the Springfied Gaol, when the 1871 census took place.
He is listed as 31 years old married and born in Halstead, Essex.
Just wondering if there is a way that I can find out as to why he was in the Gaol.....Thank you, James from Canada.

He was serving 6 months for larceny.

Hi
There is something else too - looks like the same chap, right age and in Essex.
May 1870 he was acquitted of stealing two fowls in Great Marplestead ( 3 miles from Halstead) a long with another fellow.
However , it does say this about him - aged 30 and a marine store dealer.
On the 30 August 1865 he was charged with a misdemeanour on the highway- imprisonment for 7 days or pay 10s 6d.
On the 24th February 1869 he was charged with being drunk and disorderly- imprisoned for 7 days.
