Title: Leviathon-Portmouth-Hampshire-England-1829
Post by: 85jbk on Saturday 28 July 18 10:35 BST (UK)
From the records from UK Prison Hulk Registers and Letter Books, 1802-1849
Nathaniel Salter, 19 years old, born about 1810,
Date Received 25 Nov 1829, Ship Leviathon, Place Moored, Portsmouth, Date Convicted 14 Jul 1829, Place convicted  Warminster.#9638. 2 separate felonies. Died 13 Jan 1832.

Also I suspect a brother ( both convicted on the same day- 14 July 1829)

William Salter,21 years, born abt 1808, Date Received 2 Oct 1829, Ship Leviathon, Place Moored Portsmouth, Place convicted Warminster.

Firstly where do I find further records on these two and where might Nathaniel have been buried?
Thank You

Thank You for your replys.

Any chance these two boys may have come from the south with family from Isle of Wight at that time?

You also mention the area of Kington, where exactly might this be located please?

Further to this also a marriage appears at the location you mention Kington St.Michaels, Wiltshire between a William Salter, bachelor and an Elizabeth Salter, spinster. 23 June 1834

Question is William received a 7 year sentence in 1829 and the marriage is in 1834 ? Is this the same William.

And who is the Elizabeth Salter- A cousin?

A further tid bit is My GreatGreat Grandfather John Salter mentions his location in England before coming out to Australia as Wiltshire/Staffordshire.

Look forward to any thoughts on this one please

Have you looked at online maps  :-\  I have just looked to see where it is myself.

There is a William (30)  Elizabeth (30) living with Richard (70) in Kington Langley (Chippenham) Wiltshire in 1841 also a George, Jane & Ann

Wiltshire & Staffordshire are at opposite ends of the country.  Is the Staffordshire link on the court document - 'The High Sherriff of the county of Stafford'

Are you trying to link Nathaniel & William to your John  :-\

1851 has William age 43 born Reading, Berkshire and Elizabeth age 48 born Langley, Wiltshire.

If this is William brother of Nathaniel then these baptisms would match

William Salter
Baptism    20 Mar 1808
Beenham, Berkshire
parents Richard & Sarah

Nathaniel Salter
Baptism    10 Jun 1810
Beenham, Berkshire
parents Richard & Sarah

There is also a John baptised in Beenham to this couple in 1813

Kington is near Chippenham, Wilts. However, I could not find a William and a Nathaniel nr Chippenham. Rosie99 has found the most likely suspects.

Beenham is off A4 East of Newbury,

rosie99 and Regorian..many thanks for your help so far.

Yes have been looking at the maps and area all afternoon, just wanted confirmation.

As to linking the three boys Nathaniel, William and John, yes
and I am fairly confidant they are all brothers.
There is a further brother Henry born 1815.

Richard is def listed on Johns death cert as father. Nothing much ever listed about Mother, Sarah. She was listed erroneously as Happley not Appleton.

I am just a bit hazey still on the William being sentenced to seven years in 1829 then a record of the census has him married in 1834. Is this the same William do you think?

My apologies to the error of Wiltshire/Staffordshire that should be Wiltshire/Berkshire

Further to the research on both William and Nathaniel... a fellow researcher has suggested that perhaps the William in question here is not the brother to Nathaniel but perhaps a cousin!

Also suggesting:. I think if he had been with Nat on this occasion, it would be documented somewhere.
As William went on to live a good life and have children and live to old age.

I'm not convinced given the points listed by rosie99 but how to prove that?

This is likely to be the Elizabeth that William married
Elizabeth Salter
Baptism    14 Sep 1803
Kington St Michael, Wiltshire
Parents Michael & Ann

I believe that the William married to Elizabeth and living with Richard in 1841 is Nathaniels brother.  There are other William Salter 'options' in the Chippenham / Kington area who could be the one sentenced with Nathaniel.
