My Great great grandfather Robert Patterson is listed on his son William's marriage certificate in Galway 1882 as a Coastguard
He is the co-signatory for William joining the Navy in 1865 at Dunany Point Coast Guard Station.
And William was born at Castlegregory Coast Guard Station in Kerry in 1850.
Robert is not stated on the Navy lists and I have been unable to trace him on either Irish or British censuses.
Apart from his links to William, I have been unable to find any other information relating to Robert at all - who he married, other children etc etc
The children's information is important as there is a family story of one of them being imprisoned for blowing up a post office as a protest against the British - I'd love to find out more!
Any help would be gratefully received. Many thanks in advance!

Robert Patterson...born about when?
Religion?
-
Possibility?

The Belfast Morning News of 12 February 1864 reported that the Comptroller General of the Coastguard Service, on the recommendation of Captain Knox, R.N., had promoted Robert Patterson, for many years commissioned boatman at Carlingford, to the rank of chief boatman, to take charge at Dunany Point.
-
Brilliant! Thank you!
I did find a death record for 1894 for Dundalk for a Robert Patterson, but there was no occupation to link it to him and the name is quite popular!
Do you think the Belfast Morning News would have an obit for him?
And how did you find this when I couldn't?
You've made my day, thank you.

Is this the son Robert James mentioned as the 1894 death informant?
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1900/05762/4628158.pdf
Note the informant for Robert James' death - Isabella McKenney - looks like a possibility here:

Isabella's parent's marriage, note the bride's father (and a witness):

What about this possibility for a wife Harriett (note the daughter of Susan Jane (Patterson) McKenney named Harriett in the previously posted 1901 census return)?
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1894/05959/4693722.pdf
Maybe the informant daughter:

There was a baptism in Carrickfergus Church of Ireland parish for a Robert James Patterson on 30 September 1837 (born 17 September) for parents recorded as Robert and Harriett Patterson, well north of the action so far, but given the maritime location and Robert's occupation, worth just noting for now...
-
Oh this is wonderful, thank you both!
Working back from Robert Sr's death certificate - this sounds highly likely that this is the son. I had 1838 for his birth - but close enough and the names work with those given on the tombstones.
It's funny - now looking at my grandfather's siblings' name - they were an unimaginative bunch - it's the same names over and over - Robert, Harriet, Jane.
So now there are 4 siblings?
Robert James (1837), Harriet (1845) William (1850) and Susan Jane (1853)
Wonderful.

... So now there are 4 siblings?
If the right folk, then possibly 5, for Robert James Patterson's will is available to read below and he mentions a brother George, as well as sisters Harriett and Susan Jane 'McKinney' (no mention of William though, which is frustrating...):
Probate of the Will of Robert James Patterson late of Carlingford County Louth no Occupation who died 7 April 1900 granted at Armagh to The Reverend William J. M'Cully Presbyterian Clergyman.
https://apps.proni.gov.uk/WillsCalendar_IE/WillsSearch.aspx
Added: Harriett's will is there too for reading, mention of brother George, no mention of William, which is a slight worry.
-
Ah yes, another family name - that's my grandfather.
Wow - they really had NO imagination!
-
Yes that is slightly worrying - two of them not mentioning him.
Maybe they fell out with him.
OR
George is his middle name / nickname - but then you wouldn't put that in a will.
Hmmm

On the plus side, 48 year old Susan Jane (Patterson) McKenney's birthplace of Co. Kerry, so far away from her residence in Co. Louth in the 1901 census, is very positive, given the Kerry context for William's 1850 birth. Susan's reported age at death in 1909 was 62 (usual caveat about inaccuracy applies), for now it looks like a birth year in the region of the late 1840s - early 1850s.
It would just have been more conclusive to see a mention of William in the wills (a smoking gun if his full name of William Stewart had been used), however it may simply be the case that William was off the radar for the other siblings, perhaps he had made a life remotely from them for some time, after all, he was on the other side of the country on Achill Island in 1901.
In terms of the timeline for Robert Patterson, there is an indication that he was still in Castlegregory towards the end of 1857, a letter in the Cork Examiner of 14 October 1857 from Hugh Cooper, Chief Boatman at the Coast Guard Station at Castlegregory, mentions a Robert Patterson as 'one of the coast guard men' (Robert also gets an earlier mention in a list of Castlegregory Station men cited in the Tralee Chronicle of 19 January 1855). Since the 1864 newspaper article reporting his move to Dunany Point indicated that he was at Carlingford 'for many years', it would suggest that any move from Castlegregory to Carlingford came sooner than later after the 1857 newspaper reference for him.
-
I'm so grateful for all your help on this!
Do the newspapers that you are referring to have online archives?
And can you make any suggestions for papers in the Dundalk / Carlingford area to look for obituaries of Robert?
Coming over to Ireland in Sept so may well take a trip up there as Ive never been that way before - I could take a look at the graves etc then.
