I am trying to learn more about Alfred Stanley Ellis who was born in September 1891, I think perhaps in the UK.
I believe he is sometimes listed as Alfred Stanley Ellis and sometimes as just Stanley Ellis
In 1931 he travelled to St John from Liverpool on the Duchess of York, Occupation Gov Staff, Residence Canada, residence in UK, Old St James House, Park Place, City of Westminster.
In 1939 he travelled from Liverpool to St John , again on the Duchess of York
In the 1939 register he is listed as living 7 Park Place (Also known as Old St James House), city of Westminster and occupation is Engineer, Ford Motor Company.?
In 1940 he travelled from Canada to Liverpool, giving his address as Canada House.
In 1939, he is listed as married but I have not been able to find any history of his marriage.
I would like to learn more, if possible of his time in Canada as in 1931 he give his residence as Canada.
Would be grateful for any help and or guidance as to where I might look for more information.
Many thanks Tunod

Thank you both, are you able to see what his occupation was to perhaps confirm it is the same Alfred Stanley Ellis and could you tell me when his wife died.
I appreciate your help.
Regards Tunod
-
Unfortunately the marriage record does not give Alfred's occupation.
JJ

Shame about the marriage cert. Would you perhaps be able to see any details of his military record?.

Thanks for all this info JJ - could you tell me when he died and if it is possible for me to look up his Obituary somewhere. I am hoping that might tell me what he got up to in the war in order to earn his OBE. Regards Tunod

It is possible you could be looking at two people with same name. The skill and educational requirement to be employed in as a Bureaucrat is completely different than an Engineer.
However, as a Government Employee https://www.canada.ca/en/treasury-board-secretariat/topics/access-information-privacy/access-information.html you can make a request.

Thanks Don - since the address in London and the birth date are the same, I just think that Alfred Ellis did not give a true account of his occupation in wartime London, given he was working for the Canadian Government.

Obituary for Mildred Anna Ellis in the Globe and Mail newspaper, 16 July 1984, page M5. It says that Mildred died on July 14 1984 in Aurora, in her 92nd year. A longtime Windsor resident. Mildred Ellis, nee Kell, wife of the late Alfred Stanley Ellis, OBE. Doesn't appear to be any children...just lists her sister Ethel Hutcheson and her niece and nephew. Also says she was a wartime Aunt of M Towers Ronson. Interment Victoria Memorial Cemetery.

This might help... looks like the "sister" mentioned in Mildred's obit is actually Alfred's sister.
Obituary for Ethel Alzora Hutcheson, nee Ellis, in the Globe and Mail on 18 March 1989, page A12. It says Ethel died at the Christie Park Nursing Home (I assume this is in Toronto) on 16 March 1989, in her 100th year. Wife of the late John Milne Hutcheson. Mother of Bruce and his wife Maisie, mother of Anna. Grandchildren and Great grandchildren listed. Predeceased by her brother Alfred Stanley Ellis O.B.E. and sister Pansy Cross. Interment Park Lawn Cemetery.

Just had a quick look in the 1941 directory. Strangely, there are TWO A. Stanley Ellis listings!! One of the Stanleys works for the C.N.R. (Canadian National Railway). His address is 638 Glengarry Ave, apt 6. The other is the one is A. Stanley Ellis (Mildred A), dept hd Fords, home 2127 Victoria Avenue.

Perhaps 1941 was an error?
In the 1939 directory, there is one Alfred S Ellis and he is married to Mildred. He works at Fords, address 2127 Victoria Ave.
1940, only one A. Stanley (Mildred A) Ellis, srv mgr Ford's, home 2127 Victoria Ave.
1942 has one Alfred S (Mildred) Ellis, home 2239 Pellisier (There is no occupation given).
In all of these directories, there is an Alfred M, married to Abenieta and works for the CNR. He appeared in the 1941 directory with the two "A. Stanley" listings, so he isn't the second man.
I don't see the second A Stanley Ellis in other directories around 1941. ???

There is a New York passenger list - the S.S. Queen Elizabeth, from Gourock to New York on April 7th 1945. (from findmypast)
It has Alfred Stanley Ellis, Manager Marine, with something else handwritten over the top that I can't read - but I think the last word is defense.

Checked the Toronto Star... there is a short obituary for A. Stanley Ellis in the 7 March 1962 edition, page 38.
It says that A. Stanley Ellis, veteran employee of Ford Canada and director of equipment and mechanization at Canadian Military Headquarters in London during World War 2, died yesterday at his home. It also says that he retired from Ford in 1958 after 43 years of service. He started as a garage foreman and rose to be a senior control executive. He became service manager for Canada in 1928 until the outbreak of WW2, when he was loaned to the Department of National Defence and appointed director of equipment and mechanization at Canadian military headquarters in London. He received the OBE for this work.

Thank you all so much for all the information you have given me. I really am most grateful.
I have written to Windsor Library to try to obtain Alfred's Obituary as you suggested,as I am particularly interested in the reason for his OBE
I will take a while now to digest all the other information you have given me.
Many thanks Tunod

Hi,
The obituary I posted in Reply 32 (from the Toronto Star) gives a basic explanation about the reason for his OBE. The Windsor Star obituary may have more information .... as it is your man's "local paper". I hope the Windsor library finds some more details for you. :)
