Title: no sound
Post by: BillyF on Saturday 28 July 18 19:02 BST (UK)
I was going to listen to a radio programme online while I do some work on my family tree ( 2 hobbies in one ) so connected but have no sound. I then tried youtube , same thing.

I`ve tried to fix it myself but, the " help " I followed just confused me !

I clicked on Control panel and chose Sound - the dialog box under playback shows a green tick on speakers - so I don`t know what to do next.

Thanks.

At the moment the volume is 0% = no sound, 100% = no sound !!

Troubleshooting shows that everything is enabled. It`s beyond me.

ok, tried that yesterday, but had to cancel after 40 minutes as I had things to do.

How long should it take to " detect problems " ?

Thankyou for your help.

Do you know what Sound Card you are using?

With a recent W10 update my Realtec card driver was not supported and I had to change to Windows one and....bingo!!

I even downloaded the Realtec driver from their website just to double check... no sound!

Thank you very much.

As far as I know it`s Realtek. I haven`t really time to do it today, but I`ll give it a try.

Billy, for quite a long time, in fact so long that I have learnt to live with live with it and I am a former computer consultant, the sound occasionally cuts out. Try turning it up to 20 or 30 with something playing and see if it cuts back in. This usually fixes it for me. Be ready to turn it down if it's suddenly blasts at you. It is a known Windows bug, and on my previous attempts to find a solution I decided it was easier to live with it. I assume you tried the obvious, just turning the computer off and then back on again.

Probably need to see what other sound cards are loaded...

Try this. Go to Device Manager. Find Sound, video and games controllers. Double left click to open. Right click on each entry and choose Uninstall. Shut the computer down and then restart. Windows will then reinstall the drivers.

I have a laptop which runs the "insider" version of Win10. For months now, soon after logging in, it has squawked at me and popped up a message saying "Are you having trouble with audio? Run the audio troubleshooter." Well no, I've just heard the squawk!

Then last week, having hit Mute to kill an annoying ad, I got round to updating the insider version. Sound got disabled, and Mute no longer switched it on. Guess what? I was no longer prompted to run the troubleshooter!

I reinstalled the drivers as suggested by Midase, and all is normal again, complete with "troubleshooter" popups!

Anyway, I finally found time time to follow the instrustions from Midase; ** " Perfect "** I`m " so " happy !! A thousand thankyous.

And thanks to everyone.

Yes, it`s marvellous, thank you.

I`m sat here listening to yesterday`s Money for Nothing ( bbc radio Wales ) and catching up with some family history at the same time.

Thanks, yes, I have.

I`ve just tried radio and it`s fine, it just seems to be Youtube that`s a problem.

BillyF, another Money for Nothing fan!  (I can't believe that I'd never encountered him until a couple of years ago.  He has done so much.)

I have a problem sometimes with YouTube.  If it doesn't play the sound, I use a music player to start an MP3 file, then immediately pause that and then YT works OK.  It's not ideal but I have spent too long trying to fix the problem.

Ha ha, Martin, it was when I looked at your clip of Louth that it went haywire !

Owen Money is absolutely brilliant ! He`s just had a series on TV called Down the Social, about Social clubs that are struggling.

I`m not sure I`m capable of doing as you suggest, but thanks anyway.

Full service is resumed !!

" Step 1 Navigate to YouTube site and play the video you want to increase volume. Step 2 You can find a speaker icon at the bottom of the video window, hover the cursor above it to arise the volume slider. Then you can drag the volume slider to the right to make YouTube video louder. "

In my case the slider is below the speaker icon but it is so easy.

Thanks for all the contributions

BillyF, I had previously wondered about buying it but prompted by this thread I recently bought Owen Money's Valley Boys CD on eBay. It cost me £1.87 including postage, second-hand and it arrived this morning and I found that it was autographed to somebody called Terry. However the signature was so bad that even a signature expert on Rootschat would not know that it said Owen Money if it wasn't for the context. I am currently singing along to the wonderful Ghost Miners in the Sky.

BillyF, I'll look.

Listening to the CD earlier reminded us of a true Welsh story.  We were in a pub up in the hills one evening above Aberystwyth and got talking to two elderly weather-beaten farmers.  They asked where we were from and said near Twickenham. One replied, very good-naturedly,

"We hate the bl00dy English but we love going to Twickenham."  We had a great evening with them and often remember that line.

Yet again, I had to resort to this thread !

It would seem that the overnight update of Microsoft edge caused it, it was ok at 1.30 this morning !

Thanks to you all, I managed to hold on to my sanity !

This seems to be a recurring theme with me !

I`m not saying I`m sound "less" but I can`t increase the volume.

Midase`s instructions worked when I had no sound at all. Do I do the same thing to increase the volume.

Thanks

Turned everything off then on again. Problem solved !!

Thank goodness for previous  instructions.

I found I had no control over the volume, although I could faintly hear something, I couldn`t increase the volume.

Midase to the rescue again!! Thank you.

Glad to hear you are all sorted with your sound problems Billy.  :D

Fortunately for me, as I am deaf, having sound on is pointless as I can't hear anything worth mentioning, even at a high volume.

I just use subtitles where they are available.

I`m sorry to hear that GirlGuide;I`m deaf in one ear but I like to have something on when I`m browsing!
