Title: Marriage from 1722
Post by: MacGrigor on Sunday 29 July 18 11:53 BST (UK)
Hello,

Can anyone give me details of the parishes of William Witts and Isabella Hall, who married in Chipping Sodbury in 1722?

I'd appreciate any help!

Adam

The tree on Ancestry gives Isabella's father as William HALL of Hawkesbury  1705 (wife Mary and daughter Isabella + Mary ) - his occupation : COPPER assume COOPER

Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire Marriage Allegations

9 March 1722 - by Licence

William WITTS - Groom's residence: Hawksbury's Upton

Isabella HALL - residence - not stated

Submitted by Mr Shellard : 2 May 1722

---

I think all the marriage at Chipping Sodbury including William WITTS in 1722 - have a LIC after the names, so far I've checked the next name to them ie. Simon SMITH and his Licence has been transcribed on the Forest of Dean Records.

Gloucestershire Marriage Allegations have a number of WITTS - assume this is relevant =

Again by Licence:

19 October 1757

William BALY aged 22, Batchelor, Clock maker, Hawksbury

Isabella WITTS - over 21, Spinster, residence Hawsbury

Sworn before P COLE  to marry at Hawsbury

It is best just to search by surname, as place names are spelt differently and sometimes incomplete

Mary WITTS was christened in Hawkesbury - in 1702 - father Edward

There is also on the Forest of Dean website marriage by Licence
11 May 1719 at Hawkesbury the marriage of John STINCHCOMBE to Mary HALL

Just reading the Will on Ancestry of Mary STINCHCOMB of Hawkesbury Upton 1759 - well written and talks about her grand-daughter - Elizabeth WITTS - Grandson William WITTS and daughter Mary SMITH...

Can you see any details of the marriage of John Witts and Sarah Marsh in Hawkesbury in 1689? I have the date but I can't find a christening for John in that parish.

Edit: nor one for Sarah Marsh :(

I'll have a look.

Mary HALL (sister of Isabella, married Benjamin SMITH 31 January 1730) - but doesn't appear to have any children.  Just reading her Will 1765 and talks about her mother, Mary STINCHCOMBE and grandchildren of Mary STINCHOMBE, i.e..  Robert, William, Thomas etc etc WITTS

Thanks! I'm also at a dead end with the marriage of Edward Clark and Jane Jenkins in Hawkesbury in 1723.

Looking at the Will of John WITTS of Hawksbury - he was a Blacksmith.

From the Forest of Dean records

Mary MARSH married Daniel ALWAYS at Hawkesbury - 21 April 1690 - by Licence.

Will see what else turns up!

Looking at the Parish Records of Hawkesbury

States:

Edward CLARKE and Jane JENKINS both of this Parish by Banns 3 October 1723

and the next entry says

Thos. GREEN of the Parish of Wotton Under Edge and Mary CLARKE, of the Parish of Newton Bagpath by Licence - 13 February  1724 - Licence transcribed on the Forest of Dean records 1723/1724

Wills are an invaluable way of looking for families (providing one exists) - Use the Gloucestershire Genelogical Database - to see what exists if you don't have access to Ancestry (which is usually free at your local library).

Ancestry has transcribed the Will of Giles JENKINS (Mason) 1743 of Hawkesbury - he talks about Robert JENKINS(ON) leasing.

Mentions his wife Sarah and two daughter: Jane & Sarah - talks about if these daughter's children die etc - but doesn't say these two girls are married.

There is also a Will of Giles JENKINS (Yeoman) of Hawkesbury - a couple of years after the 1743 Will.

Baptism at Hawksbury - 7 August 1701 - Sarah JONKINS (on Ancestry) - father Giles

and at Churchdown St Bartholmew St Andrew - GRLES - 12 October 1702 - parents Giles & Sarah

---

Sarah JENKINS married Robert COLINS - 30 November 1724, at Hawkesbury

---

As Giles was a Mason - he would have travelled around.

? this could possibly be Jane's father.

If you check with the Gloucestershire Genelogical database - there is a Will of William JENKINS dated 1678 of Hawkesbury, also a Mason - his Will also talks about a Giles JENKINS etc...

Perfect! Can you find any christenings for William and Giles? I couldn't find any in Hawkesbury, and no luck with Jane either.
