Hello,
I have the christening date for Helen Sarah Streeter (sic) from Farringdon in 1864. In my experience, post-1837 christening dates often hold birthdays too. Can anyone see if this is the case?
Thanks,
Adam

Sadly can only see a transcription but if she was still alive in 1939 you might get her birthday that way.
-
I've never found her in 1939 :( I think she was still living in Hornsey then, before she moved to Wood Green.
-
Did she marry or was she single woman?
If she had family living with her might be able to find her that way.
-
She was a widow. I'm fairly certain she was living with my great-great-uncle Jack (John William McGregor) and I haven't found him either.
-
The electoral roll for that year has Sarah Helen McGregor and John William McGregor living Hornsey as you said.
-
I'll look for it now. Thanks!
-
Once again, I cannot find it. I can find a JW McGregor living in Barrow-in-Furness and all sorts of other places but not in Hornsey. Nor a Helen Sarah or a Sarah Helen.
-
Have you tried Helen S living with John W
-
I'll try it.
-
Did you find it
-
Nope, no luck. I could find just about every other John W. McGregor :(
-
Surely you would be better looking for Helen with a more uncommon first name rather than John.
I presume you tried both FindMyPast & Ancestry :-\
-
Are you using FindMyPast or Ancestry?
Sometimes surnames are mistranscribed. Creative searching can be fruitful!
You know her christian name is Helen, you know her year of birth and you know she was in Hornsey. Just search using those three facts and see what turns up.
-
I searched for both names and drew a blank; I don’t have FindMyPast so I used Ancestry.
-
Have you searched for John W and Helen S in Hornsey on FindMyPast?
I see Jen and Rosie have suggested the same.
-
I don’t have FindMyPast so I’ll have to make do with Ancestry. It’s not a must-have; I have her christening details at least.
-
Have you done as I suggested?
Christian name only, year of birth only, living in Hornsey?
I assure you, that should find her :)
-
I put in ‘Helen S’ ‘1864’ and ‘Hornsey’. Maybe it’s problems my end :-\ I’ve had trouble finding people before.

Do you get any results at all?
-
Is it just an Britain subscription you have or a world one (on Ancestry)
-
A British one & it came up with a Helen S McGregor born in 1875 living in Hertfordshire and a couple of other results.
-
Are you using this search page
https://search.ancestry.co.uk/search/db.aspx?dbid=61596
I have just found it by just putting in her first name & initial (no surname) and Hornsey in 'Lived in'
She was the 2nd result

I am mystified.
Are we searching the same thing? I am searching the 1939 Register on Ancestry.
-
I’ll try again.

Must be something wrong with my phone.

Ive not been particularly following this thread - but when I put Helen S and Hornsey in, I found her easily.
(I see from the clip you have posted you have been searching for McGregor. It was suggested you just put in Helen S, and Hornsey, with no surname)
Are you putting too much info in, when you try to search, MacGregor? Often less is best, then look down the list and see what is offered. You can often find what you are looking for, even if it has a slightly different spelling that what you thought.
-
From your snip, I'd say leave out the surname - oops pressed the wrong key - and use Hornsey as location
-
As it's the free search I think I'm allowed to post these details found on F M P
Hornsey M.B., Middlesex
Helen S McGregor 1864
other person on this record
John W McGregor

Any more success, macgregor?
If you can learn how to do these look ups successfully, then it will help you no end in your research.

I’ll try it with less information on the new page.

As lizdb suggests, less is often more :)
The snip you usefully provided shows that you are still using the surname. As I said before, don't use it, and you will find her!

I assure you, that should find her :)

Did you find it?
We want to help you to get there on this one, so if you still haven't found her it would be good to sort out why. It is a good one to practice searching techniques on. As I said, learning a few "tricks of the trade" will help you in your research and mean you can have the fun of finding more things yourself.

How did you get on MacGrigor ??
-
I’ve been polishing off other parts of my tree (I received 12 PDFs the other day) so I haven’t had a chance to ‘re-open’ this yet. But thanks to everyone for the advice.
-
But not so busy that you had time to post further queries on here. ???
-
???
Adam - you have access to Ancestry. You have been told how to search the 1939 register on that site. Following the instructions given, you should be able to access the record in a matter of seconds/minutes, depending on you connection. You now say you have been too busy.

The baptism entry for Farringdon lists no birth date. Jane
