Title: Coastguards
Post by: silaswall on Thursday 02 August 18 16:47 BST (UK)
On a record for a coastguard in the mid 1800s under the term rating he is described as Caps Hold. Does anyone know what this abbreviation means? Thank you.

Is this British & Irish coastguard?  And is it from an establishment book or from a naval record?

The establishment books have a column headed "Quality" but not "Rating"

Can you give the TNA reference at all?

British record. I have just checked and the column heading is rating. Looks like an establishment book. Long list of men's names and their details. Date they joined, ship they were appointed to, length of service they enlisted for. Am I allowed to copy it here or will that infringe the copyright? Thank you.
