Title: Ernest Glencoe Parkes
Post by: Ellenmai on Thursday 02 August 18 17:04 BST (UK)
I wasn't quite sure where to post this request for help so thought it best to just put it under England. I am trying to find information on my Great Uncle Ernest Glencoe Parks and his birth family. Uncle Glen was born 7/11/1899 in Croyden according to the birth records, but the year is stated as 1900 on his headstone. I found information on the UK WW1 Service Medal & Awards Rolls giving his Reg No as 122191 1st Battalion Notts & Derby R Pte. he then moved to the 10th Battalion. It also states he was a Sherwood Forester. He married my Great Aunty Mary Smith in Conway, Caernarvonshire 1922. I would be so grateful if anyone can find anything else regarding him before his marriage in 1922.

Do you not have at least his mother's name from the birth record which gave you his birthdate?

I see that there is no separate mother's maiden name on the GRO index, which often indicates illegitimacy.

Thanks for your reply, I got his DOB from his Headstone but then found it was a year out on the birth index. Perhaps your right and he was illegitimate and that is why I am having trouble finding him before 1922.

We can't give out paid-for information from the 1911 census but if you do a free search for him on Familysearch you should be able to find him in an institution in Lambeth then, as Ernest Parkes aged 11.

I think it is the Norwood School of Industry.

I have found it and it's quite possibly Uncle Glen and could explain why he was always so smartly dressed with highly polished shoes, thank you for finding that  :)
Does anyone know if there is any information on-line about the Sherwood Foresters?

I wonder whether this 1901 census is relevant :

Josiah Collar 55 born Essex, London
Mary Parks dau single 30 born West Norwood, Surrey
Ernest Parks son 1 born Penge, Surrey
Alice Parks dau 2 b Beckenham, Kent ( this is a transcription error - she was 2 months old ).

address : 118 Alexandra Cott, Beckenham , Kent

Alice is also in an Institution in Lambeth in 1911.

Unsurprisingly, Josiah Collar was not Mary Parkes’ father (as was recorded in the 1901 census).  That may have been a cover for cohabitation.  Her father was William Francis Parkes, who died in Lambeth Sep qtr 1904 aged 74.

Thank you all so much for the information you have found and the links to the Sherwood Foresters. It does indeed look like Mary Parkes was perhaps cohabiting with Josiah Collar and had the two children Ernest & Alice. Perhaps Alice may have been adopted later as I can't ever remember mention of her. The information you have given me gives me something to works on Thanks again  ;D

Think you'll find that Alice Parkes died as a single lady in 1981 - probably may never have known she had a second name of Victoria as only 6 when her mother died and swiftly put into an institution.

Alice Parkes b.26/1/1901 (which ties in with birth reg'd in Mar.1901) died in Jun. 1981 in Surrey SW.

Electoral rolls show she lived at 82 Leigham Vale, Lambeth from 1930 to 1939.

I found no birth.

Penge seems to move from place to place. Kent/Surrey.

Thanks Annette not only did she probably not know she had a middle name, but did she know she had a brother Ernest?
Thanks Barry I did know about the marriage as he married my Gran's sister Mary and I got some information from their headstone, even though the birth year was a year out.
