Title: John Belcher - m - Martha ?? Wantage
Post by: ribbo39 on Sunday 05 August 18 02:13 BST (UK)
Hi all,
I have a John Belcher (bn. 1792c West Hanney)in the  1851 census Longcot with wife Martha dau & s/o -in-law. Martha is recorded as being born in Bishopstone, Wilts and I wonder if anyone can show where & when they were married so I can get her maiden name. Their daughter Sophia was bapt. in Longcott in 1827 so presumably they were married before that year.

If anyone can find this marriage I would be most grateful. I suspect it could be in Wantage.

I have also checked in Longcott, Berks, and Wilts without success.

Alan

Edited; Not in Wantage as I thought so where?

In 1841, John and Martha are alone, daughter Sophia is a boarder with Puzey family in Bishopstone. Head of family is Sophia Pusey age 50, next in list is another Sophia Puzey age 20. Poss widowed mother and daughter.
In 1861 John Belcher seems to have a new wife Sarah and a step-son Richard Pusey in household.
May be Martha is related to Sophia Puzey senior.

There is a marriage reg Q4 1857 Faringdon district for John Belcher and one possible bride is Sarah Puzey

Hi LizzieL,

Thanks for your help.

I don't have the 1841 census but in the 1851 John is with a Martha aged  60 born Bishopstone, Wilts. Sophia Rogers is their married daughter (bapt. 1827 Longcott) who married Anthony Rogers in 1850 but sadly he dies  in 1852 together with their s/o  in 1853. Sophia then marries an Edmund King in 1853.
Martha Belcher is bur. 1857 aged 69 all in Longcot  and John then marries Sarah Pusey in 1857 Faringdon - they were both wids. This ties up with the 1861 for Longcot.

Its just that I can't find a suitable marriage for John & Martha.

Added; In 1841 Sarah Puzey (nee Keen) (aged 30) and 4 of her children are in the Faringdon Union Workhouse.

Looked  into Sophia Puzey. She was Sophia Hammans b Garford Berks d/o William an Elizabeth. She married James William Puzey in Marcham, Berks. So it looks like the Elizabeth Hammans age 75 in the household in 1841 might be her mother. There were two Martha Hammans bapt to a William and Elizabeth one in Garford in 1791 and one in Marcham in 1798. Could be same W and E and  the first Martha died and they moved to Marcham, but the 1798 Martha is to young to be John Belcher's wife.

I've found a Sarah Puzey age 43 b Stanford (i t Vale) with Richard age 12 and Albert age 10 as visitors in the household of Isaac Baker and wife Elizabeth. Looking up birth regs for Richard and Albert in Faringdon district gives no mmn.

There is a baptism of a Richard on 6 Oct 1838 in Stanford s/o Sarah Puzey no father given.

Hi LizzieL,

I feel I might have confused the situation.
Sophia Belcher was bapt 12-8-1827 in Longcot, Berks (d/o John & Martha)- she married  Anthony Rogers in 1850 who is bur. 1852 aged 29. Sophia Rogers (nee Belcher)  then marries Edmund King in 1853.
Sarah Keen (bapt 1808) Faringdon (d/o Wm. & Ann) marries James Pusey (wid) 1832 Shipton-u-Wychwood who I think is buried 1855 In Thame. She then married John Belcher in 1857 Longcot.
This then gives a clue as to where Richard pusey came from.

The only marriage I can find is between John Belcher and Martha Taylor in 1825 in Ashbury. This may be the correct one as the two parishes are close to each other.

Hi,

I think you cracked it - Bishopstone adjacent to Ashbury and next to Shrivenham.

Thank you,

Alan

Sarah Keen (bapt 1808) Faringdon (d/o Wm. & Ann) marries James Pusey (wid) 1832 Shipton-u-Wychwood who I think is buried 1855 In Thame. She then married John Belcher in 1857 Longcot.
This then gives a clue as to where Richard pusey came from.

Sarah Puzey says shes a widow in 1851, so James Puzey must have died before then. Can't see him in 1841 and she is workhouse with children. The two oldest Phyllis and Philip have James as father   on the baptisms, Richard has no father recorded, can't find Albert's baptism. But as no mmn is on Richard's and Albert's birth reg, I wonder if James died  in mid 1830's and the younger two were fathered by someone else.
