The register is from Old Monkland, June 1846.
I'm stuck on the letters in the column under Baptism. I've looked for abbreviation help on Scotlands People and other sites and have drawn a blank. Could someone please clue me in on what they stand for?
Thanks very much. Marion

Might they be the initials of the minister performing the baptism?
-
Pennines, That's probably it! Thank you.

O.M.C.? Is that what you don't understand? Old Monkland Church.
-
Lodger, Thank you very much. Now that you write it, I can see it fits. I appreciate your help. Marion

I feel a plonker now suggesting it was the minister's initials -- but thought the middle letter was a 'U'. Can now see it's not.
I am wondering if it is a combination register of different churches or chapels controlled by the same Minister, otherwise why would the church need to be identified against an entry? That's not really a question, it's just a thought.

I'm going to a family reunion tomorrow and taking the print with me, so I wanted to be prepared for any questions. Pennines, the next time I get to the FHL, if I can look at the digitized version of the film, I know now that there will likely be a first page and that page should have the key. Our local one is closed for the summer, so I'll add this to my "to do" list. I'm happy to have the photo of the information showing the family connection and I'm sure the family will be too.
Thanks very much for helping with my puzzle. Marion

Oh wow Marion -- enjoy the family reunion.

I noticed that some of the parents lived in Summerlee, I wonder why they chose O.M.C. when Gartsherrie was a lot closer.

Hi sancti, That's an interesting point you make. My geography knowledge of the area isn't very good and I didn't think about that. I'll keep it in mind as I work along the family. Thank you for mentioning it.
Pennines, It was a fun get-together and I came back with lots more family history information. Now to get to work verifying everything.
Thanks for everyone's input!

Your thought is spot on.
Each Church of Scotland parish was supposed to keep a single register of baptisms and marriages, and in theory the register was supposed to include all denominations. Where there was more than one Church of Scotland the register should include both or all of them. This doesn't always happen, but evidently it did in Old Monkland at that time.
As to why they went to Old Monkland Church rather than Gartsherrie, there could be umpteen reasons. Maybe they were regular attenders at OMC and just went on going there after moving to Summerlee.

Thank you for clarifying that Forfarian. Much appreciated.
