Title: Rule Family from Camborne
Post by: toby webb on Wednesday 08 August 18 10:23 BST (UK)
I have found several William Rules from Camborne but would like to link one with the William who settled in U.S. The ship's manifest doesn't show very clearly William's second initial. Does anyone recognise this Rule branch?
Thanks, toby.

Ships manifest??  Isn’t this the 1930 US census entry?

When did they arrive in the USA?

Does the entry confirm birthplace as Cornwall?  Did they marry in England?

You are right Carole,  the 1930 image is here
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33S7-9R4F-FQ7?cc=1810731

William & Ada jnr were both bn in Montana, the other children bn Illinois.

What appears to follow on from these people in the same property
Ruby M Bullock step daughter age 15 born England
Louie Ellis mother in law age 62 born England

I wonder if this is the marriage in Montana 1923

So William was born in the USA and didn’t “settle” there and doesn’t appear to have any connection to Camborne

Freebmd shows Ruby M Bullock b Redruth 1915 - mmn also Bullock so appears to be illegitimate

If Louie Ellis is William’s mother in law there is no Rule connection there

I cannot see the 1930 at the moment but if I remember WIlliam senior was born in England

Sorry - mis-read your reply above - missed the jnr and thought it was the parents  ::)

You ladies are quite right. I made a mess of that. Sorry. It was indeed from the 1930 US Census. I have several relevant passenger lists and got them muddled. Tomorrow I will try to put together a coherent note on what I know for certain. T

Both Ada Rule snr (30) and jnr (3) plus William jnr (4) are shown as previously at 2 Centenary Row Camborne on an outgoing passenger list.  Left Southampton 12.2.1925 for New York

Incoming list shows the 3 arrived 19.9.1924 - going to address shown above

On Ancestry, SS Applications and Claims Index shows William Henry Rule b.25/11/1891 Camborne, son of Jeremiah Rule and Emily Webb.

William Henry Rule died 21/7/1949 Cook County, Illinois.

GRO index shows birth reg'd Mar.qtr.1892 - mmn Webb.

Clearly shown as William H. on 1940 census.

1920 census states they arrived in US in 1919.

Ada Winifred Bullock married in 1915:

Ada W. Bullock married John T. Gill in June quarter 1915 Redruth

Ada W. Gill married William H. Rule in June quarter 1918 Redruth

(Assuming here that her first husband killed in WW1).

Your additions Annette7 are timely and helpful for I now have the second marriage of Ada W Bullock. The BMD Index consistently failed to give me any entries and, even now with your additions , it is still showing a variety of names for William H Rule.
To clear up some other points. Louie was a Bullock until she married Edward Bruno Ellis in Camborne on 8 October 1911. He was killed in the early days of WW1 at The Battle of Coronel. Louie is found soon after living in Chicago and is later seen on several passenger lists crossing the Atlantic sometimes accompanied by Ruby Bullock. I share your suggestion CaroleW that she was illegitimate.
Ada Winifred Bullock was Louie's eldest daughter  born Q3 1894 . I knew of her marriage to John T Gill but have not found his death on BMD Index or on WW1 casualty lists. There may also be more info. available on Ancestry US but I do not have access to that. Thanks to you all. T

I have not been able to find attestation  records but the follwing seems to be a likely lead.
Pt. John Gill 19171 6th Bn. Duke of Cornwall Light Infantry died 16/9/1916. Enlisted at Camborne.

Also on the War Memorial at St. Martin & St, Meriadoc Parish Church, Camborne appears J T Gill
The GPR grave number 482197.

Have found William and Ada arriving 13/9/1918 Quebec on the "Scotian" although I cannot find them on UK outgoing passenger lists - however, with them is a son Gordon shown as 10 but this clearly supposed to be 10 months I think.   Checking birth index a Gordon U. Rule birth is registered Dec.qtr.1918 Redruth - mmn Bullock.

Since there seems to be no further trace of said Gordon one can only presume that said Gordon died sometime between 1919 and 1920 census when William and Ada are alone.

Hi Peter,
Louie Bullock nee Giddy born c.1868 married the youngest brother of my grandfather. He was Edward Bruno Ellis and lost his life at the Battle of Coronel in 1914. Louie was unlucky. Her first husband, a miner, had died in South Africa from a respiratory disease. Their first child was Ada Winifred Bullock born Q3 1894 and she married William Henry Rule in Q2 1918.
How about that for a remote connection!

Thanks, Toby

I guess, then, that Ada's son, Gordon U RULE would be Gordon Ulvesford RULE, after her brother.

Can you tell me Richard John BULLOCK's date of death?

Cheers

Thanks Peter. You are clearly some way from Camborne. I try to get down to that area each year and take lots of photos inc one of the Methodist Chapel in North Parade  just before it was torn down. If there is a view you are particularly wanting, I will see what I can do. T

I'm in Australia.  Thanks for the offer, I'll keep it in mind.

Richard John BULLOCK also has a RULE descent, via his mother Jane LUKE, whose father Richard LUKE was son of Mary THOMAS, daughter of John Thomas and Mary RULE.

Hello everybody,

my name is Carola, I'm from Germany (so please excuse my humble English). I'm trying to find out about the family of my great-great-grandmother Helen Rule, born in Camborne/ Cornwall. Helen married my German great- great- grandfather in 1883 and moved with him to Germany. I have only very few information about the Rule family and would be very happy to find out there are still relatives anywhere!

So, here are the names and dates I can provide:

My great- great- grandmother, Helen Rule, was born in Camborne on 12.15.1863

as the daughter of William Henry Rule (* 01.18.1841, Camborne + 04.11.1917, Camborne)

and

Mary Jane Hocking/Hoking/ Hawkin??? (birth date unknown, died 06.13.1881, Blights Row, Redruth)

Helen had fou or five siblings: Minnie, Annie, Lily (probably nicknames) and Charles and Samuel.

My great- great- grandmother married my great- great- grandfather Johann Leonhardt Braunsberg on 08.30.1883 in Camborne/ Cornwall.

William Henry Rule is supposed to have been a wealthy businessman in the mining business, owning mines in South Africa, but it's possible that's just a legend.

I would be so thankful for any information about the family.
Thank you very much, Carola

Dear Peter,
thank so so much for your reply, that's really exciting!
That is definitely my greatgrandmother's family, her name is simply misspelled.
I'd love to have any possible piece of information. I've been trying to find out more about this family for about 15 years now.
Best wishes, Carola

I forgot to mention that William Henry RULE is my 4th cousin 4 times removed.  Your great grandmother's birth was registered with the name Ellen.

I'll send you a private message.
