Hi,
I was surprised to find Richard W. Pugh and his wife Elizabeth living in Rose Cottage, Hay next door to an ancestor Ebenezer Pugh and Alice J Pugh in Laurel Cottage, Hay. This is recorded in the 1939 register. Richard W. Pugh was born 24 june 1879, Elizabeth Pugh on 11 September 1882. Ebenezer Pugh born 17 August 1873 and Alice J Pugh 5 July 1877. Ebenezer married Alice J Jones in 1915.
The 1911 Census shows Ebenezer living with his sister Mary, mother Elizabeth. and niece Elizabeth Vaughan age 3 in Vine Cottage Bronllys.
I have good records for Ebenezer Pugh, from birth in Llanvilo, but I can't trace Richard W. Pugh or his wife Alice J Pugh....
I have searched Findmypast, FamilySearch, Freereg, and FreeBMD without success. There are plenty of Richard Pugh's but no Richard Pughs born 1879 and no Richard W Pughs at all.
I would appreciate any help I can get on this as I would like to know if there is any family relationship between Ebenezer and Richard W Pugh
Thanks for your attention!

more and more complicated
Richard Wooding birth reg (as Rosie posted) gives no mother's maiden name -indicating he was illegit
but there is this baptism
14 Aug 1879 Roath cardiff Glamorgan
Richard Wooding son of William and Mary Ann
address 119 Broadway
father's occ Carpenter
I can find neither of these Richards in 1881 -or after
There is this -may be a red herring
1881Glasbury Brecon
Henry Pugh head M 52 Tailor Radnorshire
Anne wife 47 Glasbury
Roger son 11 Glasbury
George son 7 Glasbury
John son 5 Brecon
RICHARD son 1 Cardiff
but 1891
Brook Cottage Glasbury
Henry Pugh head m 62 tailor
Anne wife 57
RICHARD PUGH nephew 11 Cardiff
William Pugh Grandson 11
and next door
William Pugh 31 stone mason Glasbury
Elizabeth wife 28 Boughrood
William son 2 Gasbury
in 1861 Henry Pugh and wife Anne have a daughter Mary A age 4 b Broughrood Brecon and daughter Elizabeth age 1
could Mary Ann be Richard's mother and with Mr Wooding at his baptism?? even tough Richard was Henry and Anne's son in 1881 and nephew in 1891?????
very long shot !!!

I can't see a Pugh/Wooding birth for Richard, I wonder if this is him and he has been 'adopted'

That could make Richard a nephew from the wooding side
Wonder if the cardiff baptism William and mary A as parents - wonder if William was the father but had a different name ?

As Richard seems to have been registered as Wooding with no mother's maiden name
and Henry Pugh's wife Ann had the maiden name of Wooding and Richard is described as nephew in 1891 (son in 1881) -and Richard Wooding was baptised in Roath cardiff with parents William & Mary Ann- I am wondering if Mary Ann Wooding was his mother and William ???? his father and maybe their relationship didn't work out ? Mary Ann then took Richard to her Aunt Ann and Uncle Henry Pugh to be raised.(in 1861 they had a one year old boarding with them so I guess they liked children.)
although in 1861 Henry and Ann Pugh had a daughter Mary A age 4 living with them -wonder if she was born just before marriage ?? Will check that out

Getting back to the original request - possibly Ebenezar Pugh was related to Henry Pugh (or his family)-but we must remember Pugh is not an unusual surname in Wales

Many thanks to both of you.. Suzard and Rosie99!!
I have the following additional information...
The 1911 Census shows Dickie Woodin Pugh, age 29, born Cardiff Glamorganshire with his wife Elizabeth, age 28. born Cusop Herefordshire, married for less than 1 year, no children, living at Brook Cottage, Colebrook, Bronllys. Dickie was employed as a platelayer for the railways.
A National Railworkers Trades Union record shows Richard Pugh’s admission as a Platelayer in Breconshire age 32 in 1914 and death in 1947.
A National Railworkers Trades Union record shows Ebenezer Pugh’s admission as a Reliefman age 32 in 1903, assigned to Builth, Breconshire.
A birth record of Ebenezer Pugh, born 3rd quarter of 1873.
An 1891 Census record of him age 17, a scholar, born in Llanfilo Breconshire.
A 1901 Census record of him age 27, a railway Porter, as a boarder in St Clement, Radnorshire
From what I can see, I don't think that Ebenezer and Richard were directly related, and I think they met up with each other on the Railways. Ebenezer seems to have been a little better off because Vine Cottage had 6 rooms, and Richard's Brook Cottage only four.
I opt for Richard W as Dickie Woodin a nephew of Henry Pugh, Tailor, who lived in Purgatory Cottage (really!!) in Glasbury in 1891... It was William next door who lived in Brook Cottage.
And just to cap it all, Google Maps found Brook Cottage to be in Velindre.. half way between Bronllys and Glasbury!!
You can see Colebrook Cottage at http://www.mccartneys.co.uk/pdf.php?vars=propertypdf-lettings-mccrps-HAY140187, see attached
I think we should let Ebenezer and Richard Rest in Peace
Thanks to you all in Rootschat! You are a great resource full of great people!
