Hi there
Does anyone have any idea where I can find a map of Leitrim Country around 1830 online? I need it to be quite detailed as I am trying to find the place where my great, great grand father was born. The handwriting is very hard to decipher on his military record so I am looking for places that are similar to it.All searches on line have come up with very little. The only clearly comprehensible word is Leitrim!
Many thanks
Liz

This is 1838, Leitrim on the Eastern edge of this sheet, about halfway down. Click on the map to return to the overview

The site has a range of viewable maps

Thanks. Will give it a go!

Is this the same man? if so are you sure the address is a townland in Leitrim rather than Leitrim Street as in other thread?

The OSI maps have lists of towns, localities and townlands.

Use the search by county and see the drop down menus.

Hi again- Thanks for the ideas. This is my brick wall - I can't find my relative's DOB or place of birth!
aghadowey - It is the same man- but I think it is not Leitrim Street as in his military records it specifies the county as Leitrim and also gives a parish- Inch (possibly Inishmagrath?)- and separate town - Black something or other I think. Also it would have been completed when he was about 20 years younger and presumably living somewhere else. It did occur to me though, as a bit of a coincidence...!
Thanks for you time. Always appreciated!

Why can't you post an Image of what you are talking about?

Hi Hallmark.
Here they are. I hope they are clear. I'm not very good at this!
Let me know what you think. I think it says Blackliner or Blackrock. I have had no joy with finding any of these places. I have tried on Rootschat with this before but with no luck!

This might be bit clearer.

Have Microscope beside computer!!
It's Blacklion

I have found a Blacklion but I don’t think it is in the parish of Inch. The one I have found is in county Cavan.
-
Yes...it says born near Blacklion

A microscope :-\
Looks like Blackline. There is a place in Ireland called Blacklion but it's in County Cavan although not that far from the Leitrim border.

Ahhh. I have never thought about that. Any ideas about next steps?

https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0830 Ennismagrath Parish borders the Cavan Parish of Killinagh where Blacklion is!

Wow. It’s worth having a look at. Thanks very much!

Could this be Blacklion in Cavan but directly on border with Co.Leitrim

Yes, that is what was agreed.
