Title: Mary McKay of West Hartlepool
Post by: dickiemint on Thursday 09 August 18 12:28 BST (UK)
Apologies if I am on the wrong Forum etc - newbie
I have a copy of a Birth Certificate of Mary Ellen (McKay?), b 28 Apr 1886. She was born in Throston Workhouse to Mary McKay (of West Hartlepool) - though the Fathers information is missing.
Mary Ellen (sometimes Helen!) married William Henderson, b 18 Jun 1879 in Sunderland. The Marriage Certificate shows her Father as William McKay (though spelt MacKay!).
Trying to obtain info on Mary McKay, when she married, maiden name etc
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated....

Welcome to rootschat

Do you have Mary Ellen on census prior to her marriage.

If she was the Mary Ellen whose birth you have showing her as illegitimate then it is extremely likely that she invented a father when she married.

Should her birth be 1866, you are showing it as 1886 and her marriage as 1879

Thanks for the welcome and reply.

I thought I had her on a Census prior to marriage but mistakenly had her mother, Catherine McEntee and father as William G McKay.

Then received the Birth Certificate to show her mother as Mary McKay with no Fathers details, which has thrown it all.

Interesting the illegitimate part you mention, I wouldn’t have thought of that. She does have him down as William MacKay (not McKay) and a Labourer on her Marriage Cert…

Birth is definitely 1886, I think I may have confused that bit - 1879 was the DOB of her husband William Henderson.

Marriage was 19 Aug 1903 in Stranton Hartlepool. Mistakes again perhaps, her age is 18 (not 17) and William Henderson shows as 22 (not 24)

I still need to find Mary McKay born c1861 South Shields, mother of Mary Ellen in 1881 and earlier.

The Henry William Brown marriage certificate may help  :-\

Thanks so much Rosie for your replies...
Don't have time tonight - prior engagement - but will look again tomorrow.
I had already looked at the Witnesses earlier today - on the Online view they are Flora Isabella Short and Henry Powell - who I think were/got married.
On the actual Copy of the Certificate they are shown as Thomas Armstrong and Jane Ann Davison..

Thank you again - will get back into it tomorrow....

Freebmd shows that Flora Short and Henry Powell were the other couple  whose marriage was registered under the same reference, not witnesses to the wedding.  By 1903 the GRO reference would cover 2 marriages, when registration started in 1837 up to 4 marriages could have the same reference  :)

Mary Helen/Ellen's sister Rachel (Brown) married Pounder Davison in 1907, perhaps Jane Ann Davison was a relation  :-\

No panic for a reply, you will need time to check what I have suggested  ;D

Thank you again - I wondered why there appeared to be more names than I expected when checking Marriages...
You are right - Rachel Elizabeth Brown married Pounder Davison, they had a daughter, Eva Isabella b1908. When Rachel died in 1919 Eva was taken in by my grandparents Mary Ellen/Helen and William Henderson - not sure if they adopted her, always knew her as Aunt Eva. Jane Ann Davison was Pounder's sister

In a newspaper cutting when William Henderson died it states 'dearly beloved husband of Nellie (nee Brown)'. Just to confuse my issue

Really appreciate your assistance - thanks again Rosie

I am glad that you can make the connection to Rachel, at least that proves that the Mary McKay/Brown marriage is right.  I will leave you to see if there is anything more you want looking for, let us know if there is.
