I am virtually certain that James Kerr Boyle, born in Salford, Lancashire in 1872 and orphaned when he was 7 years old, emigrated from the UK to New Zealand around 1890. He appears in the 1881 UK census, but not in 1891, when he would have been 19.
Ancestry shows me lots of entries for a James Kerr Boyle starting in the late 19th century. It seems he married, and that he might have been in trouble with the police :). But he seems to disappear after about 1910.
To save me having to expand my Ancestry subscription to a global one just for this one fellow, I wonder if anyone can provide any more details about him?
Thanks!

It looks like he went to Australia. There's a report in the newspaper dated 7 April 1914 that James Kerr Boyle , of no fixed abode and an inmate of the Kyneton Hospital , was among those listed as having tuberculosis and notified to the Kyneton Council :

Well, thank you all for a wealth of information.
It seems James Kerr emigrated in 1893 ... so I'll have to have another look through the 1891 census. He married and had a baby - William Massey Boyle - pretty quickly, by 1895.
This branch of the Boyles had quite a tragic story. I first got interested in James Kerr Boyle, born 1803 (the grandfather of the James Kerr who emigrated. The older James Kerr was a social activist in Manchester and a poet. He and his wife died within 16 months of each other in 1843-5, leaving 4 young orphans, including William Massey Boyle. This William Massey and his wife also died within 10 months of each other in 1879, also leaving 4 young orphans, one of which was the younger James Kerr. One thing that puzzles me is that in the 1881 census, James Kerr and his older sister were living with Boyle aunts (Emma and Isabella); a brother, Sydney was living with his maternal grandfather, but the 4th child, Edith Mary, was in an orphanage. Why?
The older William Massey died (if my memory is correct) from alcohol-related issues; his wife may have had TB, I can't recall.
At least the younger William Massey enjoyed a longer life - I see probate was proved in Auckland in 1979, so he died aged 83 or 84.
Thanks again
Tim
-
Hi Tim, yes I followed up the children and wondered why Edith was not with Family also.
It certainly was a interesting Family to look at and quite a story you have untangled there.
Funnily I was born/grew up in New Zealand :)
-
William Massey Boyle and Florence had 2 more children;
Gilbert 1898, died 1988 (birth 17 February 1898)
Arthur 1899, died 1989 (birth 17 June 1899)
So they lived a long life also :)
Likely Marriages;
1921/5137 Alice Homer/ Arthur Boyle
1926/1437 Madge Milne/ Gilbert Boyle
-
Thanks Trish ... that would be James Kerr and Florence. Great info - thanks.
Reviewing their family tree, the short-lived paternal Boyles were:
Archibald, 1727-1770, died aged 43
James, 1769-1815, died aged 45
James Kerr, 1803-1845, died aged 42
William Massey, 1835-1879, died aged 43
James Kerr, 1872, to about 1916, died about age 44
So the younger William Massey, died aged 73, Gilbert, aged 90, and Arthur, aged 90, were very special!
-
Yes they were :)
Not sure if you saw I went back and added Arthur/Gilberts Marriages.
-
That's fantastic - thanks again.
Pity I hadn't got this far 2 years ago, ahead of my first, and so far only visit to NZ - I might have been able to located a few 5th or 6th cousins :)
OK, off to bed now (I live in Myanmar)
Cheers

It has been suggested that this was Arthur Boyle's marriage:
1921/5137 Alice Homer Arthur Boyle
I have found this 1938 death notice:
https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/NZH19380704.2.2.4?page=3&phrase=2&query=arthur+boyle&title=ALG%2CAS%2CDSC%2CKWE%2CNZH%2CNZ%2CTO%2CPWT%2CROTWKG
His birth:
1916/2681 Homer Charles Alice Charles William
Marriage of his parents:
1915/2589 Alice Commons Charles William Homer
So if I am on the right track, the marriage of Alice to Arthur Boyle was her second marriage?

Hi Trish, just a small correction to your reply #8...... ;)
Part quote-
"William Massey Boyle and Florence had 2 more children"
Here are those births showing the correct father-
1899/16369 Boyle Arthur Florence James Kerr -
1895/18322 Boyle William Massey Florence James Kerr -
1898/1329 Boyle Gilbert Florence James Kerr

Its a small world as my Father/Mother were living in Tuakau at the time of Charles Homer Boyles death 1938.
I am sure that it would not of been a large place then and likely my Parents knew the Boyles.
-
Well, again, thanks to all ... I've finally found some time to sit down and digest everything. I attach a picture of the family tree as I see it. I realise that there are probably living descendants of William Massey II, Gilbert and Arthur. (I just realised there is a typo - should be CHARLES Homer Boyle, 1916-38).
Focusing on two of the women ... Florence, who married James Kerr Boyle in 1894(?) was born Florence Ford in 1868, and married Richard Widdows in 1881. They had 3 children, of whom 2 were still surviving in 1920 when Florence made her will - hence she had 5 surviving children at that time, 2 from her 1st marriage and 3 by her 2nd.
Alice Homer ... perhaps I am missing something, but I don't understand why minnehaha thinks she may have been married twice from the newspaper announcement of the death of Charles Homer Boyle. Being the nephew of Mr. & Mrs Shields could mean they are Alice's sister and husband. Also, since Charles Homer Boyle as born in 1916, and Charles William Homer died in Oct. 1917, that would have been an extremely unpatriotic affair! Perhaps Charles William was Alice's brother?
What fun!

Part quote.....
"Alice Homer ... perhaps I am missing something, but I don't understand why minnehaha thinks she may have been married twice from the newspaper announcement of the death of Charles Homer Boyle"
A possible scenario?:
Starting with the death notice in 1938 for "Charles Homer BOYLE, son of Alice & Arthur, aged 22 years". Therefore his year of birth was about 1916.
There is no birth registration in New Zealand for Charles Homer BOYLE but there is one for a Charles HOMER in 1916, son of Alice & Charles William Homer who married 1915. These details shown in my post above.
Two deaths in 1918:
1918/9516 Homer Charles William 35Y
1918/86833 Homer Charles William 23Y
Alice HOMER may have remarried in 1921, to Arthur BOYLE[/b] and her new husband brought Charles Homer up as his own? However Charles may not have been legally adopted as is shown at his death registration-
1938/19535 Homer Charles 22Y
[The Cenotaph details for a Charles William Homer are probably not connected to the above Alice Homer.]
N.B. The above information is only relevant if it relates to "your" Arthur BOYLE.
There are also two other marriage possibilities:
1920/11945 May Ogg Arthur Boyle
1923/9665 Mabel Muriel Andrews Rankin Arthur Boyle
I will try & obtain the newspaper death notice for Arthur BOYLE in an attempt to settle to whom he was married.

Just trying to keep track of James Kerr Boyle's life of crime ...
I have three offences:
1902: 4 counts of forgery; sentence: 2 years hard labour
1904: Forging and attempting to defraud: 2 years, 6 months
1906: Obtaining funds under false pretenses: sentence: 6 months
Did anyone find any others? But with these, it seems that as soon as he completed one sentence, he committed his next crime. In her will, Florence observed in 1920 that her husband had not supported her or her family for 15 years - more like 18, I think, for the first three of which he was almost continuously in gaol.
I can imagine that, when he got out in early 1907, he may have decided to skip off to Australia, where he died of TB some 7-8 years later. But did he continue to forge and to defraud there?
-
The 1906 Police Gazette (page 112) notes only one prior conviction, and a sentence of 2.5 years; page 436 notes 5 priors and a sentence 6 months.
-
Well he was attempting to pass himself off as James Burton Burke, so that could account for some discrepancies!
In trying to track him down in the 1891 UK census I even tried the Burton alias without success :)
-
Hi,
Death notices for Gilbert BOYLE [1988] & William Massey BOYLE [1979] sent by PM..........
According to her death notice, the Alice BOYLE mentioned above who died on 12.9.1993 does not appear to be connected to Arthur Boyle.

-
Thanks, minniehaha - saw the PM. And thanks for eliminating that Alice (also my mother's name)
-
trish1120 was wondering ... you might have forgotten by now ;) ... how William Massey Boyle (the elder) and his wife, Sarah, died in 1879. I have located their death certificates.
Sarah died on 5th January 1879, in Stockton, of haemorrhage from stomach (ulceration). Interestingly, the informant was Wm. M. Boyle, present at the death, so if (as I speculated) there was a separation post-bankruptcy, it was not so serious as to prevent him attending her death-bed.
William died in Cheetham, Lancs. on 10th December 1879 of "Natural causes aggravated by drink". I presume that he did not drink himself to death in the 11 months since his wife died - the bankruptcy a couple of years earlier would probably have contributed, but I wonder whether his profession - wine merchant - may also have been to blame! There was an inquest, which seems a bit strange to me.
Cheers

Hi.
Now have inhand photographed copies of the probate papers. [R 25251842]
Will forward if a private email address can be supplied by private message.
Re the divorce listing above, there is a red horozontal line that indicates that the file is restricted. The file being sealed to the general public for 100 years. [R22723057]
Like with marriage records I assumed it would be just 80 years, before becomming an "historic" record, but upon arrival was informed that the restriction is for 100 years. So a 1926 listing I had thought I would look up was unavailable also.
Alan.

Twenty three images sent.
For me what has been interesting in this Archives lookup secession, was that in both cases registering for probate, was complicated by the fact that spelling and date errors, were found in the documents being submitted.
Each error having to be rectified before the next step could be undertaken.
Proving once again how important it is to carefully check legal documents before signing them.
Alan
