My great grandfather William Henry Coles D.O.B. of 23rd March 1853 given on UK Royal Naval Seaman Index Service Number 6781B .
GRO shows possible birth of a William Henry Colles (mistake perhaps) born Newton Abbot Vol 05B page 105. mother's name Maynard.
Is there anyway I can check if this D.O.B. information is correct?
I found a baptism for William Henry Coles 24th April 1853 father John Coles a carpenter and mother Mary Ann Coles.
I have two family trees on ancestry (Coles Tree and New Coles Tree) but my relatives have asked for them to be private.

Thank you. The spelling of Coles seems to vary! I will have a look.

Do you not have his Marriage Cert which will have his Fathers name/occp?

I cannot find any records for William Henry Coles on the GRO site. I have reported it but have not received a reply.
I have the family bible with the names in it so I know his name is correct but I cannot order any certificates for him. I also have his naval records which give his details. Those records give the same D.O.B. as the family bible.
I found a record for his death 25 Feb 1933 . He lived at 15 Ellacombe Rd Torquay with his wife Frances. I know this address is correct as my grandfather lived there.
I'm fairly sure the D.O.B. date is correct as all the other details follow on. Just wanted paperwork to confirm it.

The 1891 census shows William Henry to be 38 born Teignmouth so 1853 sounds approximately correct. (Living with wife Frances & 5 children). The 1861 census for Teignmouth shows a family - parents John & Mary Ann with 5 children including a William Henry aged 8 born Teignmouth living at 14 Brook Street, Teignmouth. In a later census William Henry is described as a Naval Pensioner, born Teignmouth. I would suspect that the East Teignmouth baptism you found was correct, but as Trish has suggested, the marriage certificate should confirm his father's name and occupation.

Thank you Rosie; I think you have found them. It is the spelling of the surname that makes it difficult so often misspelt.
