Ronald took a 2nd Class Degree in Litorae Humaniores at Merton College in 1935. He later, post 1947, taught classics at a prep school.in Folkestone, Kent. I do not know where or when he was born or died. Can anybody help?
-
Have you ID'd him in the 1939 register?
Can the college help with any information itself?
What information led you to choose to research his name out of all others?
-
I don't know how to access the 1939 Register for free. He was a teacher at my old school (I'm writing a history of the school and it's teaching staff) and his name is the latest one for research. I've contacted Queens College Oxford and they have told me he took his degree at Merton. The Merton Archivist is away on holiday so I thought I'd try some other avenues of enquiry.

The 1939 register is available on Ancestry and FindMyPast. Most libraries have access
-
Is it free to access. I don't have any paid subscriptions.
-
it would be free to access at MANY public libraries.
-
You can do a free search on it, we are not allowed to do lookups from it other than what is available on a free search. I added to my last post it is available at local libraries.
You can play with the free search to get a birth date but you will not get a full address

If he was in the forces during WW2 he probably would not show on the register. It was done to obtain information on the civilian population for the issue of ration cards etc.
-
OK I'll check my library.
-
I apologise for sounding negative, but as you don't know his date of birth, how are you to know if any possible candidates in 1939 you find are the right person?
Additionally, as Rosie says, it is possible he was in the forces, so not on the register.
When did he leave the school?
-
No idea. I'll know more when the Merton College Archivist answers my enquiry.

I think you need to wait until, hopefully, you get some facts from the archivist on which you can safely base your research.
I can see a couple of people on the 1939 register who are schoolmasters and are about the right age to be your man. But it's all speculation until you have a date of birth.

Maybe 1915.

There is no birth on freebmd that matches that date/place or on free search of 1939 register using that date of birth. There is a birth in the Dec qtr 1913 though (Freebmd)

He served with the South Staffordshire Regiment 1940 - 1945, in Egypt, India and Burma. His army number was 165766.

WW2 records are still with the MOD and cost £30

Thanks Rosie.
