Title: Parish of Symondsbury
Post by: toby webb on Monday 13 August 18 09:54 BST (UK)
I wonder if anyone can put  me in the right direction for this parish in the 1851 Census. Lists of parishes don't show Symondsbury nor Chideock for that matter. Thanks, Toby.

I tried a very general search of 1851 census and it gave  street name, Symondsbury, Bridport, Dorset.

you might find this link useful

Both Chideock and Symonsbury come under the Registration District of Bridport.

I had not considered it to be a street  as it is frequently shown as a parish. Still having trouble however made worse by Joseph Cleall b.1812 not showing up although Family Research gives details. Could you let me know the enumeration District in Bridport. thanks, T.

1851 has a Joseph Cleall (b 1812) with wife Fanny and three children at Vearse (?), Symondsbury.

To find out the piece number(s) for certain places for a census, I suggest using TNA website and the advanced search facility of the catalogue.

http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/advanced-search

Put in the parish name in the top box and then put the class number in one of the boxes marked "Any of these references."  So for 1851, put HO107.  Then put the specific date in the year box near the bottom and you should get just one result

http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/results/r?_aq=Symondsbury&_cr=HO107&_dss=date&_sd=1851&_ro=any&_st=adv

Hope that helps.

Just to tie things together, we have come to the conclusion on more recent thread questioning the reference that the relevant page simply doesn't exist on Ancestry.

Stan has just posted that on Ancestry piece 1861 only goes up to folio 303, page 35. Your Cleall family are on folio 429.

To clarify, the details I posted in reply4 were taken from FindMyPast and I thought that Ancestry would have the same database. Apologies......I should have known better.   ::)
