Hi all,
I am currently in the process of doing my family tree with the hopes of finding more information about my great grandfathers.
Few questions to ask with some possible pointers if you would all be so kind...
It's highly fascinating for me as Arthur George Pope 8200 fought and died in WW1 for the British army and my other great grandfather fought and was wounded in WW1 for the German army. I have relatives on both sides of the war which I would love to know more about.
1) military information for both? Best places to look? I have found snippets on AG Pope but have nothing for Vinzent (Vincent Bombera) where could I find things about him? Not being fluent in German does not help..
2) how do I find out more about Bombera’s in Germany? It's a very rare name with no clear origin. Vinzent was born in Nakel? Which I think is now Poland but was Prussia? My grandad Bruno was born in Berlin and said his grandmother had a pub there? But have no idea of a name or maiden name or anything... of real interest to me would be my grandads siblings. He was one of 5 but didn't let a lot of information go to us. His oldest sibling may have died after being hit by a tram? His brother moved to poland, His sister stayed in Germany and his youngest sister (had a funny face which we believe to be down syndrome) and was reported to have died from pneumonia... a victim of experimentation perhaps?? So many questions regarding that side so any German expertise would be amazing even if it was just to put names to them.
Any help would be greatly appreciated

he perhaps appears on a certain site
as Vinzent Bombera

the only one listed in Berlin is
Vincent Monteur Bombera

As far as I am aware he would of been in Berlin yes. Do you know if it says how he was wounded? Or where or is ratel Bromberg a location?
-
Cawborn - make another post so that I can send you a Personal Message - I have found a familytree with 2 Bombera members and the tree owner is German - BUT - he only speaks German

In case you don't know this Arthur George died at Courcelles-le-Comte France 21/8/18.
The objective was to take the German forward trenches around the railway which they did.

Fantastic I have been doing research and was given co-ordinates of where he died so this might help me to pinpoint the spot where he died.
I know he also made a career out of being in the army, not just a WW1 soldier, I also understand he was wounded on more than one occasion during the war. would anyone know where i could possibly find out what he did in the army prior to ww1 and what wounds he had during the war?

My grandad was Bruno Bombera and he was born in Berlin on 09/09/1923. But have no idea of the age of Vincent unfortunately...
Also my grandad had brothers and sisters all born in Berlin, where could i find out their birth records or would WW2 scupper that?

His service number gives an attestation date of 1906.
Squares A10 & A16 on this map.
https://maps.nls.uk/view/101465146
Recent history was that this whole area was in British hands & had been since the Somme.
During the spring & summer of 1918 the Germans launched Operation Michael & the British lost all they had gained.
This action was part of the British offensive to regain that ground.

Any idea where I might find out where he served etc..

There won't be much pre-war but after 4/8/14 the war diaries are the place to look.
What you don't know is when he moved from the 1st. Batt. to the 7th.

ok cool, i have got the war diaries for the 7th battalion so it would be worth me getting the ones for the 1st as well then. Just a lot of handwriting to try and decipher!!

The first will give you the details surrounding the Mons Offensive & the withdrawal to the Aisne & the Arne.
This is where these men earned the name "the old contemptibles"

The old contemptibles? What is the meaning of this?
-
The original BEF consisted of just 390,000 men. They were up against a considerably larger German Army.
When they arrived in France the Keiser referred to them as a contemptible little army.
This was seized upon back home & made good propaganda.
The men wore it like a badge of honour & thereafter were known as the old contemptibles.
The German commanders in the field had a lot more respect.

Hi
when researching in Poland use polish names. Nakel is - Nakło nad Notecią
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nakło_nad_Notecią
Herés a link to the Posen project.
http://poznan-project.psnc.pl/index.php?lang=en#prettyPhoto
If you search for Bombera you´ll get 1 hit in Naklo (not yours)
Here are the record scans for Naklo
https://www.genealogiawarchiwach.pl/archiwum-front?locale=en#query.city=Nak%25C5%2582o&query.suggestion=false&query.thumbnails=false&query.facet=true&query.sortMode=DEFAULT&goComments=false&searcher=big&query.query
As far as i can see they range from the end of the 19 century up to approx 1911
There´s quite a lot and not knowing German will not help.

Wow this genealogy is incredibly hard!!
I have found out that Vincent Bombera was born in 1888 in nakel and his wife was zophia. They were buried in Zloto?
