Title: Service record for a Frank Pepper
Post by: MacGrigor on Tuesday 14 August 18 09:09 BST (UK)
Hello,

Can anyone see if anything survives for:

Frank Pepper, sergeant in the Buffs, service number 200348 according to the absent voter list. I can see a medal index card, but it ends in 5 not 8. I very highly doubt it’s my 2x great-grandad (aged 41 when war commenced) but the family did live in the Southwark area at one stage, and were living in what was then Kent in 1911.

I’d appreciate any help!

Adam

Was your man born in Fermoy Ireland 1893 (ish) - 200345 was.  Was in Margate in 1914.  Lived in Kennington Park after the war.  Spent the whole war in India.  Next of kin given as his fiancée Miss E Lonsdale.
That record on FindMyPast.

Can you see if you can find any service records for men (specifically enlistment dates) in the Middlesex Regiment with the following service numbers (I have viewed medal cards already):

Any before PW/5040 (up to PW/5030)
PW/5041
PW/5043
Any after PW/5043 (up to PW/5050)
Edit: I know their battalions already.

As you know we are always willing to help but if you are able to call up medal cards and medal rolls, is there a reason why you can't do this yourself?

I don’t have FindMyPast so I can only see medal rolls.

It is possible to search FindMyPast without a subscription, you can see an index of the records they have for a Frank Pepper often showing an approx birth year and place of birth.  You can also put the regiment into your search

Are you looking at Ancestry for medal records?

Yes.

Ancestry has service records (Frank Pepper's is there).  Use the search page and select the Draft enlistment and Service and or Pension Records or anything else that catches your eye using the medal rolls as a starter for the name and number.  Remember there will be a number of men who didn't serve abroad and thus don't have medal info and many whose records are lost anyway

Good luck - you'll need it!
