Title: ww2 Immigration to Scotland
Post by: ScottT91 on Wednesday 15 August 18 12:43 BST (UK)
Good Afternoon Everyone,

I have a bit of an awkward case in my cousin's family to look into today. My cousin is looking to find out more about their Grandfather, who they believe to be an immigrant that arrived in Scotland during WW2. Their Grandfather was Peter Farrell, but according to my cousin he may have adopted this name at some point in his life. The family believe that he may have came from Poland during the war, I suspect most likely fleeing from the invading Axis armies. He would have been very young at the time.

What i do know is that Peter lived in Glasgow and was married to Margaret Hyde in 1952, which was registered in the Blythswood district. I've also found the couple in 55 Raglan Street, in the Milton area of Glasgow, 1961. Margaret passed away in 1992 and according to my cousin, Peter passed away some time between 1985 and 1987.

Does anyone have any ideas how to look into this? Looking to hopefully find out if Peter was indeed an immigrant during the war.

Thanks

Thank you Rosie99.

Unfortunately I don't have the marriage certificate, I took as much info as I could from Scotland's People website. I'm aware this might be the only way to get any further, so not sure where to go from here.

He may have given false information when he married but it may be your only lead.  I would order the certificate

Yeah, that sounds like a good idea. I'll look into this and report back when I have the details.

Thanks

Certainly a lot of Poles managed to escape and come to England. When I was young (1950's), there was a married couple living in a caravan in our grounds. He was a former Polish naval lieutenant. Many thousands fought for the Allies, the Poles took Monte Cassino in 1943, and there was a Polish Armoured Division in the British Army, Normandy, Polish Airborne Brigade at Arnhem.
