Title: Ann Guis
Post by: Finley 1 on Friday 17 August 18 00:06 BST (UK)
hello

I have just found that my 7 ggrandparents were French...

Guessed it was heading that way as I was in Padstow and St Merryn -

So very exciting to discover this and to now wonder and search in a beautiful country.

All I have so far is the marriage of Thomas Michel and Ann Guis:  13th April 1688 - Saint - Zacharie - Var --

Oise France.

So where do I go to find more.. I needed a spark  - so this is it.
  ;D ;D ;D ;D

Hello,
could you tell us more about them (where did you get the info concerning the marriage , what is Oise for in your message ...)
I found no marriage Michel/Guis in Saint Zacharie (Var département), around 1688.

Hello :)

I wish I knew more.   I have had Mary Michel in my tree for some time, and decided to attempt to go back a little further with her.   Now that Cornish OP is available on line.

So checked out what they had and it came up with the attached.    Then I searched Ancestry and came up with the marriage.

Which totally fit with the dates - but of course -- have No Idea - that it is correct.
Oise - is just the name on the Ancestry document.

I have no other clue :)  so what do you reckon.  I need to go to VAR  (ha ha )

So jumping the gun in my excitement.. whilst still perusing all avenues..

I checked for more children in Cornwall and haven't found any, but it seems Thomas will have died around 1710 so -- not sure.

I also checked the French 'Var' region but not sure how to go about searching in France.   :(

You say you can find nothing

oh well it was an interesting possibility...

having never stepped over to France with my lot as yet - its all a new adventure.

It could explain why the marriage is not found in the catholic registers of Saint Zacharie

Why don't you click and see the record of the marriage ?

Let's focus on Saint Zacharie , departement du Var ( which is near Marseille).
Can you try to know from where has Ancestry got the date of the marriage , from which register, book or whatever,?
It could be very helpful.

I checked out the areas etc and that has helped me get an idea of where they were.

I have asked Ancestry if they can give me more information.. and am awaiting a response.

I really appreciate your help :)

It seems it is one of Ancestry.com's own publications.

so that opens can of worms for me...

How trustworthy is that I wonder.

xin

attached then looked at it again and thought maybe some kind of copyright law against posting it whole..

so a breakdown is:
source title

publish date 2009

Don't bother' I 'll do that for you. Genealogie 60 is a genealogy association , 60 is the number of the departement called Oise.

Genealogie 60 answered that they never did any research in the Var département.
So, I just phoned them and they say that indeed they sold datas to Ancestry , they don't remember where the date and location of the marriage of this couple came from.
I suggested that may be the couple went north through France in order to emigrate in England, they may have settled a while somewhere in Oise and had a child who was registered in the parish registers  with the mention of the marriage. They agree it could have happened but there are 736 villages and cities in Oise . The task to find this birth is too big in this case .
Another possibility is that the date is no right , another Anne Guis married a Thomas Michel at another date ( not 1688 ).

I'l try to search Saint-Zacharie's registers to find Thomas and/or Anne's births , though possibly huguenots , the huguenots births often were registered in the catholic registers , but not the marriages.

I would love to find more, they sound so interesting.. so many possibilties... to discover with these two..

and there you go

So WDYTYA  would sort this by me just turning up at the nearby Offices and telling them the names.

maybe I need to dream harder and envisage their journey. :)

I am reflecting ---- on Ann and wondering if maybe I should attempt a general 'GUIS' search to discover a possible AREA for the family.

 ::) ???

and to see if they were Definitely Huguenots..

will leave it for now..

but this particular bone down for a day or so.

From 1630 to 1689 I found several MICHEL families  in Saint-Zacharie, but nobody called Thomas.
Absolutely no GUIS in the village.
1690 and 1691 : no registers.

MICHEL is quite common, there are people called MICHEL everywhere in France. GUIS isn't and is mostly found in the south of France (Var, Vaucluse, Alpes Maritimes, Bouches du Rhone).
