Good afternoon all,

I've got a bit stuck trying to trace William Petchey (b. circa 1820 Widford Herts) back beyond the 1861 census - can anyone help please?

This is what I have so far:

That seems very feasible though can't find a Great Adam in Herts!

I must admit I can't see a first marriage  but noticed a first child I think

On line tree gives 22 March 1857 St. Peter St.Paul Carlton by Dover marriage Margaret Ann Castle.

Could this be first marriage?

St.Peter Burnley Lancashire 19th November 1848

William Petchey full age private 90 or 96th Reg. Address Ashton under line father George a gardener

Mary ann Marsh full age Gt. James Row? Burnley father William a Labourer

Could be out of area as in the army.

Cant find Williams Baptism but may be a Sister/Brother?

Still cant find a Baptism for William, other children to George/Mary;
MARIA 25 November 1821 Much Haddam
EMMA 9 May 1824 Widford, likely buried 31 Dec 1844 age 20
CAROLINE REBECCA 24 August 1845 Much Haddam, Gro confirms Mother as nee Clark

Ladysmith Barracks Mossley Road Ashton under Lyne. Looks like this is where William would have been stationed.

Vestry Meeting at St Marys to appoint a new Sexton - When considering the appointment -in support William Petchy  the rev Chairman said that Petchey had done his work well since he had been appointed cemetery keeper and had quite changed the aspect of the burial ground.  He had also exerted himself to preserve order; for whereas   the solemn service of the dead was formerly read amidst all manner of unseemly interruptions, it now proceeded without those disgraceful accompaniments which one might expect at a public garden tea party...  - William Petchey was elected
