Title: Murdo McLeod, Jessie McLeod, Raasay, Rona
Post by: scmcleod on Saturday 18 August 18 20:34 BST (UK)
Hello everyone. I am looking for any information on my Raasay ancestors, Murdoch and Jessie McLeod. They were moved from 'Manish' in Raasay to Rona, then on to New Zealand in 1864. I believe I have found their 1851 census record, but I can't really verify it (details below).

Jessie died in child birth prior to their departure from Rona, and Murdoch arrived in NZ (aboard the Viscount Canning) with five sons. One was called Malcolm.

I am doing some digging before we head to Raasay in a few weeks, and any suggestions or information would be much appreciated.

Also, apologies if I have posted incorrectly or in the wrong area!
Thanks in advance,
Steph

Have you read "Calum's Road!" by Roger Hutchinson?

Very cheap on Amazon Steph.  How folk managed to make a living on Rona is incredible left for , just rock! They used a cave for a church but  a good harbour for the fishing. Sadly by the time Calum Macleod built his road in the north the folk had left for better crofts at the south of Raasay.
