Hi there
I don't usually use this forum as my ancestry so far has been Scottish/Irish ancestry.
I'm querying this for a friend who is beginning to look into her English ancestry. What are the best sites to use for finding English ancestors and do they have a similar web site to Scotland's people.
Kind regards
Rosie :)

www.freebmd.org.uk - for BMD registrations from 1.7.1837
www.familysearch.org - BMD, census etc etc
Any of the subscription sites for census and other info - (eg) Ancestry, FindMyPast etc

Thank you
Rosie :)

Also to use alongside freebmd as it gives mothers maiden surnames on births prior to 1911 when freebmd start to list them also ages at death for early deaths. PDF's for some births / deaths can be ordered from there too (You just need to register)
https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/indexes_search.asp
After that it depends where in England you are looking
eg Lancashire http://www.lan-opc.org.uk/

for parish registers before 1937 the best free site not yet mentioned is probably FreeReg

For various Dorset records; not just PRs and census:
http://www.opcdorset.org/
Scroll through the home page to see a list of other counties with a similar scheme.

I assume you mean 1837. :)
