Hi there... in researching our family history we found marriage documentation of our ancestors in Quebec, 1858. However, I'm stuggling to read most of what is written. The marriage was between Bernard Toohey and Elizabeth Flanagan. Toohey was a member of the 39th foot regiment in Dorset. Also, we think Flanagan's parents were Francis (?) and Bridget.
If anyone can please help with deciphering the handwriting, we'd be really grateful!
Thanks
Maria

Hi, had a look and think the relavent bits are
8 June 1858
Bernard Toohy, private 39th Reg of age son of John Toohy and Bridget Flanigan of Co of Galway, and
Elizabeth Flanigan resident of Quebec of age dtr of Francis Flanigan, deceased, and the late Bridget McDonnell. Witnessed Bartholomew Kerrigan and Jane Flanigan.
This is my interpretation and stand to be corrected.

A little more detail ... the groom’s father was also deceased, and the bride’s parents were from Roscommon.
I’m uncertain whether the bride’s mother is Bridget McDonnell (as suggested above) or McDermott.

ADDED - Welcome to RC, Maria :)

For what it's worth Bridget's maiden name looks more like McDermott to me in it's entirety - and the last 2 letters seem to have a line through them denoting 't'.

Maria, I wonder if these replies were of any help to you?

Well done raising this Bookbox.
You worked hard deciphering the entire article - and it is a shame that this hasn't been acknowledged by Maria, who made the request for help.

Hi all
First of all, my sincere apologies for this delayed response... I am not all too great at checking my emails and will endeavor to respond to posts on this forum more quickly going forward - this was my first post and I did not realize I would get such great responses so quickly! I am very grateful for all the responses - and particularly to Bookbox for the full transcription. The information you have all provided is very helpful and much appreciated.
Many thanks and apologies again...

Hello Maria,
I've been in this forum for several years and it still surprises me how quickly so many people respond. :) I think a lot of newcomers do not expect such speedy replies (and so much help).
It's a lovely website and I love spending time here. In fact, I often spend too much time here... ;D
Anyway, WELCOME to Rootschat and good luck with your research!
Best regards from Germany,
Karen
