I am interested in the James LANIGAN who was transferring his publican's license in 1891 as advertised in the Auckland Star.

Can anyone ascertain how long he had held a publican's license?

Probably not before 1883

Hi Mckha489,
I am able to identify the James Lanigan you have found. However I do not know if he was one and the same as the above-mentioned publican.

I hadn’t ever heard of the Lanigans and after looking at this I feel I should have! Especially Pierce.
Anyway, here in 1887 the licensee is someone else

Looks like James had the license for only 18 mths or so

Thank you. I wonder if anyone has access to the electoral rolls?
Yes, Pierce Lanigan was well known, in particular with the building of the Calliope dock in Devonport, Auckland. He had two brothers, John & James who were in partnership with him at various times. Whether James was the publican is what I am trying to establish. I do wonder if there may have been another man of the same name, just to complicate the search.

No, same man, here he is as the licensee and getting married and the brother of Pierce
Phew
4 sept 1890

What were you wanting to see on the electoral rolls?

Hi Mckha489.....
Your reply #7 is a wonderful find, I had missed it. It ties in James to being the publican, well done!
Re the electoral rolls, I thought there may be more to be found there as to James' movements. We believe he left New Zealand for Australia in the late 1890's, leaving his wife and family behind. However this may not have been permanent but we have not found a positive sighting of James anywhere after this period.
There was this report in 1897……
https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/AS18970710.2.31?end_date=31-12-1916&phrase=2&query=james+lanigan&start_date=01-01-1896&title=ALG%2CACNZC%2CAS%2CAKTIM%2CDSC%2CKWE%2CNZH%2CNZHAG%2CNZ%2CTO%2CPWT%2CROTWKG
There is also a newspaper item about a James Lanigan in 1912 which may not concern the former publican but it would be good to find out more about the Remuera man.
https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/AS19120918.2.71?end_date=31-12-1949&phrase=2&query=james+lanigan&start_date=01-01-1912&title=ALG%2CACNZC%2CAS%2CAKTIM%2CDSC%2CKWE%2CNZH%2CNZHAG%2CNZ%2CTO%2CPWT%2CROTWKG
Any help very much appreciated.

I think that the Remuera James in 1912 might be James Leo Calliope LANIGAN (they loved that wharf!) b 1888 son of Pierce and Mary
Electoral Roll
1911 James Leo Calliope and Florence Olive living Norana Avenue, Remuera. James = Baker
modifed to add that also in 1911 is
James Leo a photographer living at Mackelvie Street Grey Lynn, same address as mary and Pierce. ( think it must be the same person on two rolls due to marrying that year even though there is a variation in occupation looking at BDMs JLC is def son of Mary and Pierce)
(Florence was nee KING they married 1911)
1914 - James Leo Calliope and Florence Olive, 52 Albany Road. (he's a musician now!)
1919 it’s just James Leo Calliope c/- J. King Remuera James = Photographer not sure where Florence is
1928 James & Florence are both at 11 Queen Mary’s Avenue, his occupation = preserver
they both died in 1966

might this be an Australian death in 1920?

Yes I had come across that death entry too. [See below for direct link]

James' father was Michael but mother, Margaret. Apart from the mother's name being different, I had discounted this death and so many years on, now I can't remember why. Will have another look through TROVE to see if anything pops up.
You have solved the Remuera connection, thank you. Good to rule out "my" James.
Thank you for your interest and help.

It's a pleasure of course. I find that looking at other peoples problems often helps me with my own!

Another pair of eyes can do wonders...... :)
This is another part of a topic about James Lanigan and mention is made of the 1920 death and why I think I would have ruled it out:
